The Wallabies might have gone down in a Bledisloe Cup thriller to New Zealand in controversial circumstances at the death – but you couldn’t fault the players’ effort on a memorable night in Melbourne.

Just two players finished with ‘fail’ averages of below 5 – one of them, Jordan Petaia, came agonisingly close with 4.99 – and the usual suspects all fired at Marvel Stadium to provide our highest per-player rating in a defeat in 2022.

The lone major failure was, of course, Darcy Swain, who paid the price for his hideous tackle on Quinn Tupaea with a gastly 3.13 – even Reece Hodge, who didn’t play a minute, finished with a higher average (we’ve off course not counted his score – it’s only fair to Reece).

On the other end of the scale, four Wallabies finished in the excellent range of seven or higher; summing up the night, only Marika Koroibete (7.03) and the outstanding Rob Valetini (8.38) were in their usual positions.

The latest Wallaby to step in as fullback, Andrew Kellaway’s two tries and attacking flair were enough to drown out some at-times questionable defending, finishing with an average rating of 7.56 to be third. Best afield in your eyes, however, was Pete Samu, who filled Michael Hooper’s shoes as openside flanker with utter aplomb to just shade Valetini with an 8.42.

In one of the most perfect rankings we’ve ever seen, Bernard Foley, while given a pass mark by most for his kicking night despite THAT late controversy, ended up with an average of – and we swear this is real – 6.66.

Yep. The devil really was with Bernard on Thursday night.
