Pakistan’s former cricket captain and prime minister Imran Khan is recovering after he was shot in the leg during a failed assassination attempt in the eastern city of Wazirabad.
The 70-year-old, who was his nation’s leader for four years until he was ousted in April, was attending a protest march to demand early elections when gunfire sprayed his vehicle in the convoy.
One member of his convoy was killed while Imran was reportedly shot in the shin but is in a stable condition after being taken to hospital in Lahore.
A video confession by the gunman has been released by Pakistani police in which he responds to a question about his motive by saying: “He was misguiding the people. I wanted to kill him. I tried to kill him.”

Imran’s successor as prime minster, Shehbaz Sharif has issued a statement condemning the attack.
The cricketing legend, who led Pakistan to the 1992 ODI World Cup title in Melbourne, has been accused by the nation’s election commission of failing to declare gifts from foreign dignitaries, including watches and jewellery.
Pakistan’s current cricket captain, Babar Azam, posted on social media his support for Imran: “Strongly condemn this heinous attack on @ImranKhanPTI. May Allah keep Kaptaan safe and protect our beloved Pakistan, Ameen.”
His team kept its faint T20 World Cup semi-final hopes alive on Thursday night by beating South Africa in a rain-affected 33-run margin.
The win moves Pakistan to four points in group two, needing to beat Bangladesh on Sunday and have South Africa or India be upset by Netherlands or Zimbabwe respectively with a net run-rate swing.
