How to make golden point even more golden

In the NRL, when two teams after 80 minutes are locked on the same score, we then enter a period of time named golden point.

The concept of Golden Point is for the two teams to play an extra 10 minutes – with two five minute halves – to decide a winner by either kicking a field goal, penalty goal or scoring a try.

Should neither of the three ways to win take place in said period of time, we have a draw and both teams finish with a point.

I have always liked this concept despite the fact that my team, the Newcastle Knights, have sadly won the least amount of golden points.

Some golden point stats.

How many times has it happened? 150
How many decided by a field goal? 90 (60%)
How many decided by a try? 30 (20%)
How many decided by a penalty goal? 13 (8.67%)
How many has been drawn? 17 (11.33%)

I do like golden point as mentioned before but with 60% of it decided by a field goal, I can think of adjustments to the concept that is designed to increase some excitement.

I would like the duration of the 10 minutes played unless a try is scored. However, not under golden try.

– Penalty goals are ruled out
– Field foals and Tries still remain
– If one team kicks a field goal, the game continues and the team who kicked the field goal cannot do so unless the other team does to tie it up.
– Should both teams after 84 minutes have kicked a field goal each, same rule apply. This means both are still allocated to kick them.
– If one team kicks a field goal and the opposition scores a try, game over
– If the team who kicked the field goal scores a try, game over
– If only the team who kicked the field goal in the 82nd minute is the only point scored in Extra Time, that team wins.
– The try in Extra Time doesn’t need to be converted.

Examples under this new created concept. Newcastle vs Gold Coast 20-all after 80 and now we head into extra time.

– Tanah Boyd kicks a field goal in the 84th minute, Gold Coast lead 21-20 and the game continues. Lachlan Miller scores a try in the 87th minute, Newcastle defeats Gold Coast 24-21 and that’s game over.
– Jackson Hastings kicks a field goal in the 82nd minute, Newcastle lead 21-20. Tanah Boyd kicks a field goal in the 85th minute, 21-all. Tanah Boyd kicks another field goal in the 88th minute, Gold Coast lead 22-21. Should that be all that happens during Extra Time, Gold Coast win 22-21.
– Jackson Hastings kicks a field goal in the 83rd minute, Newcastle lead 21-20. Kalyn Ponga scores a try in the 86th minute, the game is over and Newcastle win 25-20.

I can see this creating extra excitement for the game and if your team is down by one under these rules in extra time after 86 minutes, it will lead to suspense.

Will they kick a field goal to tie it up or go for a try to win it all? This is an idea I came up with, not everyone will agree with me and that’s perfectly fine.

Now Roarers, I have made my say. How do you like golden point? A fan of it or not? Do you have your own idea? Should we just call a draw after 80? The floor is yours.
