NSW coach Kylie Hilder has doubled down on rookie half Jesse Southwell ahead of their crunch trip to Townsville for Game 2 of Women’s Origin, dropping halfback Rachael Pearson and giving the 18-year-old control of the side.

Southwell will be joined by Taliah Fuimiano, who takes over the 6 jumper, as well as the returning Tiana Penitani – who was ruled out of the first clash on gameday – and star forward Simaima Taufa, who returns from a shoulder injury.

Isabelle Kelly, who was taken to hospital after Game 1 with a throat injury, has been named to retain her role in the centres.

Pearson is out of the squad entirely, with Brooke Anderson, who deputised for Taufa at lock, in the reserves. Cassey Tohu-Hiku comes into the extended bench and would be in line for an Origin debut if selected.

The Blues need to win by eight or more points to take the series, having lost 18-10 in Parramatta in Game 1. If they were to win by exactly 8, it would enough to level the aggregate score and retain the shield.

The Maroons have named a much more settled side, with only one enforced change to their 17. China Polata comes in on a wing for an Origin debut, replacing Julia Robinson, who was suspended for two games following her part in the incident that injured Kelly.

“It’s a really good opportunity for China to step up and play at that level,” said coach Tahnee Norris.

“She’s played some outstanding football in the BMD Premiership this year. She’s an extremely powerful player and strong individual.

“She knows exactly what she needs to do. She’s a similiar build to Julia Robinson so looking forward to her taking up the ball for us.”

Romy Teitzel has been moved into the starting 13 from the bench, swapping places with Shaniah Power. Veteran Jillaroo Tallisha Harden is on the extended bench, where she is joined by potential debutant Sienna Lofipo.
