In some respects, it still doesn’t feel entirely real.
The fact that we Australians finally have our first-ever Aussie manager in Premier League history still makes you pinch yourself.
We didn’t know when this historic day would come, but now that it has, we won’t take it for granted.
Ange Postecoglou’s journey to the biggest league in world football certainly wasn’t traditional.
Having clawed through the managerial ranks and travelled across the globe managing clubs through Australia, Greece, Japan, Scotland and now England – it’s an inspiring path to say the least.
This ultimately highlights that Australia can produce quality managers that can go far and beyond the dugout in Australia.
There will be lots of people around the country that will tune in at early hours of the morning to witness the former Socceroos manager in action.
The prospect of Postecoglou going toe-to-toe with one of the best managers ever in Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola – fresh off accomplishing a historic treble this past season – will be a sight to behold.
His first home game in charge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will come up against Premier League giants Manchester United.
This sums up only a few of the many exciting challenges that await Postecoglou in England.
One thing you can be sure of? The 57-year-old will be ready for the biggest task of his managerial career so far.
His eye-catching style of football – most prominently on display with his Scottish domestic treble-winning Celtic team – raises genuine curiosity if that success can translate over to Tottenham, who are a club desperate to capture silverware.
He finds himself on a quest to rebuild Spurs’ identity on and off the football pitch, which is something that went missing after the departure of Argentinian manager Mauricio Pochettino in 2019.
There will be huge pressure placed on the shoulders of Postecoglou to deliver Tottenham’s first major trophy since 2008, but in reality, he will need time to impose his tactical outlook on English football.
Tottenham’s “win now” approach under most notable managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte – two elite title-winning coaches – failed as they were unable to claim a single trophy for the London outfit.
You get the sense that in order for Spurs to get the best out of Postecoglou, he needs time to develop a winning Tottenham team, which is something that’s obviously not going to happen overnight.
A successful season for Postecoglou will be a top-four finish in the league, which will ultimately get them back playing Champions League football – two things they weren’t able to accomplish in 2022-23 due to finishing a disappointing eighth in the table.
We can only hope that Tottenham fans get behind Ange the same way every Aussie has and will continue to do.
He has a chance to achieve something great, and although it may not be smooth sailing every step of the way, the Spurs manager needs all the encouragement he can get.
It’s time for Ange to make his mark.
