Collingwood’s minor premiership hopes may be decided on a Friday night as the AFL locks in its fixture for the final round of the 2023 home-and-away season.
The Magpies, who sit two games and percentage clear atop the ladder but may need two wins from a tricky final three games to secure the McClelland Trophy, will face Essendon in the regular season’s final Friday night match, denying them the chance to head in knowing exactly what they’ll need to do to hold off the oncoming Melbourne and Brisbane.
Both the Demons and Lions will get the opportunity to build their percentage should that tie-breaker be required, with the Lions hosting St Kilda on Saturday twilight and the Demons heading to Sydney to battle the Swans on Sunday afternoon.
Geelong and the Western Bulldogs lock horns on Saturday night at GMHBA Stadium in what could prove an early elimination final, while the final match of the season sees Carlton and GWS do battle with a home final on the line at the later than usual time of 6:10pm (AEST).
In a league first, there will be no overlap on the three Sunday fixtures, with Port Adelaide taking on Richmond at the earlier than usual time of 12:30pm (usually the first Sunday match begins at 1:10pm), and the Demons and Swans playing at the usual time of 3:20pm.
