Adelaide United wunderkind Nestory Irankunda is on the brink of an A-League record sale, with the 17-year-old set to join German giants Bayern Munich.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has reported that a deal worth £3m GBP ($5.75m AUD) has been agreed for Irankunda, which would more than double the previous record received by an Australian club, the $3m AUD that it took to take Marco Tilio to Celtic from Melbourne City earlier this year.

“Bayern are closing in on deal to sign 17 year old talent Nestory Irankunda, here we go!” wrote Romano, using his now trademark catchphrase for a done deal.

“2006 born winger on the verge of joining Bayern in 2024 from Australian side Adelaide United. Understand fee verbally agreed is £3m fixed fee plus add-ons.”

The add-ons are not known, but generally relate to appearances made for the first team, goals scored and international caps.

Irankunda burst onto the scene as a 15-year-old, debuting in the A-League in January 2022, and made his mark immediately with 3 goals in his first year and five in his second.

It wasn’t just that he scored, but also the quality: his liveliness on the field and incredible shooting power saw Irankunda marked out as a superstar from the moment he stepped onto the field.

He is currently suspended from A-League action after being sent off last weekend in the dying stages of Adelaide’s draw with Melbourne Victory, but showed the best of his skills the week before, rattling in a 30m free kick as United smashed Melbourne City.
