WATCH: The moment Serena Williams was knocked out of the Australian Open
27th seed Qiang Wang has caused the upset of the 2020 Australian Open, downing 23-time Grand Slam champion and tournament favourite Serena Williams in the third round.
Williams who had defeated Wang 6-1, 6-0 at the U.S Open just a few months ago was expected to ease past the Chinese player but it was that sort of day at Melbourne Park.
Williams predicted fourth-round opponent Caroline Wozniaki also suffered a shock loss leaving the women’s draw wide open.
Williams was chasing her elusive 24th grand slam title to match Margaret Court’s record but it’s proven to be the most difficult to achieve.
That's the earliest #AusOpen exit for Serena Williams since losing to Daniela Hantuchova in the third round in 2006.
