Round 21 continues tonight when the Parramatta Eels take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8:05pm (AEST).
For these two top-four sides, the stakes are starting to get high.
For the Eels, it’s a chance to perhaps jump clear of the chasing pack, with the Roosters and Sea Eagles taking on last year’s grand finalists. For the Rabbitohs, a win keeps them in the hunt for a top-two spot.
The Parramatta Eels have hit a flat spot at a bad time. Two straight losses, including a shutout to the Roosters, has made their top-four spot very precarious.
Part of this can be put down to the injury to Mitchell Moses, with his kicking game sorely missed.
However, the Eels have other attacking firepower and it went missing last round. Clint Gutherson was visibly frustrated, however, he needs to take on some of the responsibility.
Moses is expected back in a big boost for the Eels.
Oregon Kaufusi has been named at prop, with Reagan Campbell-Gillard out indefinitely. Marata Niukore and Bryce Cartwright have been added to the bench, with Ray Stone dropping out of the 17.
Whereas the Eels are struggling, the Rabbitohs are tuning up nicely for the finals.
South Sydney are shooting for their ninth straight win and are approaching the type of form that just may challenge the competition favourites.
The Rabbits barely got out of first gear against the Dragons but still did it easily. At their best, their left edge is the benchmark for the competition and Blake Ferguson will need to be on top of his defensive game.
In good news for South Sydney, Cameron Murray returns from suspension. Tevita Tatola may make an early return from his knee injury, while Benji Marshall is out of quarantine and on to the bench.
Prediction
This match is third versus fourth but the difference in form is far greater than that.
The Eels will be desperate to win as a loss potentially relegates them to a bottom-four spot when the semi-finals arrive.
I just don’t think they are creating enough opportunities to score, whereas the Rabbits are starting to look like real contenders for the premiership.
