On paper, we have got a large mismatch this afternoon, with the Bulldogs already assured of the wooden spoon. The Sea Eagles do need to win to keep their quest for the top four alive.
In recent years, the absence of Tom Trbojevic has proved to be kryptonite for the Sea Eagles. However, with team confidence at an all-time high, they fought back to edge the Canberra Raiders 19-18 last round even without Tommy Turbo.
Daly Cherry-Evans kicked the winning field goal but Kieran Foran was the star, back to something approaching his best form. Moses Suli was also a standout, but he can’t make the 17 this weekend, such is Manly’s wealth of returning stars
Tom Trbojevic returns from injury at fullback, with Brad Parker also making his return. Toa Sipley retains his spot as a starting prop, with Josh Aloiai starting from the bench.
The Bulldogs were brave but ultimately fell short against the Knights last weekend. They made sure of the wooden spoon in the process.
Trent Barrett hasn’t been able to come up with a winning combination this season, with his halves always moving through revolving doors. Rumours of salary cap pressure are growing, so some will surely be playing for their future this afternoon.
Suspensions, off-field incidents and loan recalls have created upheaval in the forward pack. Adam Elliott, Luke Thompson, Corey Waddell, Corey Horsburgh and Ryan James are all out. Jack Hetherington and Ava Seumanufagai come back in, with Matt Doorey and Joe Stimson promoted. Bailey Biondi-Odo has been named at dummy half. The new-look interchange consists of Brandon Wakeham, Ofahiki Ogden, Chris Patolo and Sione Katoa.
Prediction:
I’ve got an overwhelming sense of doom for Bulldogs fans in this one.
It wouldn’t be easy against the Sea Eagles with a full-strength Bulldogs team. With the forward pack decimated, this will get ugly – maybe not quite as ugly as their last match, though.
