After a dominant first day of the Boxing Day Test, Australia are closing in on yet another Ashes series win over England. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the action from 10:30am (AEDT).
Things could hardly have gone better for Australia on day one. From captain Pat Cummins’ scintillating three-wicket opening session, to Mitchell Starc claiming the crucial scalp of Joe Root for yet another unconverted 50, to Scott Boland nabbing his first Test wicket in front of a jubilant home Melbourne crowd, it was a dream day for the home side.
All out for 185, England failed to reach 200 for the third time in five innings this series; with their other scores a 236 and a 297, little wonder they’ve hardly given a yelp thus far. With Australia cruising to 1-61 at the close, only 124 runs behind, it’s now looking all but certain the Aussies will have the urn safe and secure by New Year’s Eve.
The one blemish was the late wicket of David Warner, caught in the cordon after racing to 38. He’ll be kicking himself that he wasn’t able to get through to stumps and push towards a first hundred for the series.
In contrast, things went from bad to worse for England. After losing the toss and being sent in, only Root offered any real resistance to the Aussie attack. But his half-century was ended by a poor waft outside off stump, to yet again deny him a maiden century in Australia.
Today might just be the biggest day of Marcus Harris’ career. Backed in despite poor returns thus far in the series, a full day to bat on a wicket that should surely improve, in beautiful conditions against an unthreatening-looking England attack might just be his best ever chance to record a career-saving score.
However, even if England to manage to get him early, they’ll have to get through Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and the red-hot Travis Head, and fast, to have any chance of turning this Test around.
