New Zealand and Sri Lanka face off at the SCG as the Super 12s of the T20 World Cup continue. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7pm (AEDT).
New Zealand were brilliant in all facets against Australia. Finn Allen set the tone with the bat with a brutal and quick cameo, before Devon Conway reminded Australia that a few poor performances in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy didn’t dent his confidence before the T20 World Cup.
The only criticism would be how slow Kane Williamson batted against the Aussies. The New Zealand skipper is struggling with an elbow injury, but he has to bat with more intent and score at a higher strike rate if the Black Caps are to put pressure on the Sri Lankans.
With the ball, Tim Southee and Trent Boult will be expected to fire with the new ball, before the spin duo of Mitch Santner and Ish Sodhi keep it tight in the middle overs.
Sri Lanka had a great game against Ireland, but their batting faltered against Australia with the extra bounce on offer in Perth. With the SCG wicket being similar to conditions at home, they will enjoy batting at Sydney and bat with more freedom.
Wanindu Hasaranga was targeted mercilessly against Australia, and will hope to bounce back at the SCG.
Prediction
This is one of the few times where neither side starts the game as favourites. While New Zealand had a dominant win against Australia, Sri Lanka play spin better and boast a better spin bowling attack to put New Zealand under pressure in the middle overs.
However, I will back New Zealand to get the job done in a close game.
