Leigh Matthews makes a compelling case for why the draw result should remain
The Crows and Lions played out the second draw of the 2024 AFL season, with scores locked at 90-all at the final siren.
Flashback to Round 21 2005, and Fremantle Dockers ruckman Justin Longmuir takes a screamer with 10 seconds to go. Fremantle are a point down.
Longmuir from the right forward pocket of the Subiaco end of the ground keeps cool and drills it through the middle.
The crowd goes nuts.
Eight years later, Longmuir is in the West Coast coaches box, he witnesses history repeat as Luke Shuey bombs it in to the pocket that Longmuir made famous, hoping for a mark.
Nic Nat flies high and takes a grab almost identical to that of his coach.
He goes back and the siren sounds. He steadies and boots it straight through for an eagles win.
It is almost scary how similar the circumstances are between these two match-winning kicks.
They both were on a Friday night at Subiaco Oval, their respective teams had come from behind and were pressing forward, both teams got a free kick on the wing and the player who took the free kick bombed it long.
A big ruckman then took a huge contested mark and from the same pocket of the same end, from the same distance they converted to win there team the match.
Even the after goal celebration was the same!
