Arjen Robben is injured, yet again. The same goes for Mehdi Benatia, and that’s no surprise to Bayern fans.
In fact, this was quite expected to happen.
Bayern fans, although realising that this was to happen sooner or later keep reminding themselves that Robben is a human, and a human, as he becomes older, delivers less and less by the day in terms of football.
The undeniable fact is that Robben has become older, has delivered less over the last season, and will most likely continue not delivering this season too.
To give him some credit though, he has really been a vital part of Bayern’s victories and accomplishments over the last couple of years. Buying him from Chelsea was one of the best moves Bayern ever made; but were Bayern supposed to sell him after last season’s injury?
I’ll leave that one for you to answer.
Bayern are up against a tough challenge, Olympiakos Piraeus.
Many might be saying that this should be a relatively easy win for Bayern, well let me tell you something, it won’t be. If Bayern are planning to beat a team that is said to be stronger than FC Augsburg (the team that Bayern barely defeated in the dying moments of their most recent game), they will have to play outstandingly.
They will need to dominate the possession rate, be at their creative best in attack, and convert their opportunities.
Without Robben or Benatia’s services, and the fact that Bayern are playing away, that would be quite challenging for Bayern to maintain.
On the plus side, though, Javi Martinez and Mario Gotze are back on the prestigious Bayern benches and
Kingsley Koman made quite a promising debut against Augsburg last week. I sure do expect it to be one thrilling contest, and one that Bayern shall hopefully come out of as victors.
