It’s not uncommon to see a catch taken after rebounding off a close-in fielder, but what about off a wicketkeeper’s head?
New South Wales wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy keeping up to the stumps had no time to react when Victoria’s Meg Lanning edged one. It smashed into Healy’s head and while she was forced from the field, her pain was at least eased by the fact the ball had rebounded to Lauren Smith at cover for a freak dismissal.
It was a huge wicket in the context of the match, with Lanning, the Australian women’s captain out for 12.
While wearing a helmet would have saved Healy from a nasty bruise and a headache, the wicket would not have counted if it rebounded from a helmet under the rules.
NSW Breakers captain Alex Blackwell filled in behind the stumps while Healy was being assessed by medical stuff. Healy, though, showed just how tough she was returning to open the batting and finishing with 65 not out as NSW chased down Victoria’s 132 without losing a wicket to book their place in the Women’s National League final.
Healy tweeted after the game that she was fine, with her head knock bringing comparisons to other strange cricket dismissals, like this one in a South Australian club match.
There was also the time Andrew Symonds suggested Michael Clarke owed him a beer after he got in the way of a straight drive that was destined for the boundary.
