Injury concern for Brumbies Blake Schoupp after scrum comes down awkwardly on top of him
Fortunately, the prop was back on his feet but it's likely he'll miss several weeks with that shoulder problem.
David Pocock might be one of the toughest men in world rugby, but he’ll forever have a soft spot for his mum.
On Friday, the superstar flanker will have Jane Pocock’s name stitched on his jumper as the Brumbies pay tribute to the women in their lives ahead of Mother’s Day.
Mrs Pocock outed her son as a “mummy’s boy” on social media two months ago after the pilfering back-rower recommitted to the Wallabies and Brumbies until 2019 following a sabbatical next year.
“Mum was always the one dropping us at sport at 6am or picking us up at 5pm or whatever it was,” he said on the eve of their Super Rugby clash with the Bulls.
“She’s spent her life running around after my brothers and I, so I’m very grateful for her support and love over the years.”
Jane, who lives in Brisbane, gets to “one or two” Brumbies games a year and will be at GIO Stadium on Friday.
Pocock said she used to be a nervous watcher but had improved.
“As long as I stay up and don’t go down, she’s pretty happy,” he laughed, adding it was really special to be able to honour her this Friday.
“We should probably celebrate mums more than once a year.
“You look at all these athletes running around and it’s taken a lot of sacrifice from the people around them – whether that’s family or friends or a special person in their life – to really help them get to where they are.”
Jane Pocock recently started a new parent coaching business in Brisbane, to where the family moved in 2002 from Zimbabwe.
“I think she figured after having three fairly boisterous boys, she’s got a bit to offer and I agree so, hopefully, it goes well!”
Pocock said he hadn’t thought too much about his break from rugby next year, focused instead on finishing this season.
“It hasn’t been something that I think has changed my motivation or the way I approach things,” he added.
