Archer Semra Ferguson has appealed her non-selection in the Australian team for the Rio Olympics.
Ferguson booked Australia a quota spot in the women’s competition in April when she won the Oceania qualifiers in Tonga.
The 26-year-old had been the favourite to fill it, but Archery Australia this week flagged their intention to nominate 23-year-old West Australian Alice Ingley instead.
An Archery Australia spokesperson confirmed Ferguson had lodged her appeal on Friday, with an independent tribunal hearing to take place this coming Wednesday.
That could be followed by a potential hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Ferguson was Australia’s form female archer last year, winning the Australian Open amid other impressive results.
However the Queenslander’s showings have dropped off slightly of late, placing fourth at this year’s Australian titles, which Ingley won.
The pair’s performances at the final selection camp in Brisbane a fortnight ago were enough to convince selectors to pick Ingley.
Australia will take a team of three male archers to the Rio Games – London 2012 Olympian Taylor Worth, 2014 world indoor champion Ryan Tyack and 20-year-old Alec Potts.
The trio earned Australia three quota qualification places at last year’s world championships in Copenhagen, where they narrowly missed out on a medal, and overcame a strong selection challenge from triple Olympian Matt Gray.
