This competition has to be one of the best ideas Rugby Australia have come up with, and we’ll get to see just how good today.
It’s been a big week for the Western Force, of course I’m talking about the announcement that the men’s team will play 7 exhibition matches – World Series Rugby games, against teams like the Rebels, Crusaders, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Hong Kong.
Going into this game, neither side has had much success in the limited history of women’s rugby, with neither team finishing higher than 4th last year in the now defunct National Women’s XVs.
Preseason form has the Rebels losing to the Brumbies 70-10 in Albury in a game that was more about building as a team.
The Reds sport 10 capped internationals from Australia and New Zealand, but teams like the Rebels and Force don’t have this option.
The Melbourne side boast players like Jayne Kareroa who represented Cook Islands at the WRLWC last year, who will also captain the team.
For the Force, again, a very unknown team, given that we didn’t have a chance to see them at the Brisbane Tens, so it’ll very much be on the run.
All things considered, the Force will probably win at home, given the long travel time of Melbourne, as the home ground advantage will probably be the turning point in this one.
Prediction: Force Women by 4.
