Young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw is in doubt for the first Test against Australia after being carried off the SCG for what appears to be a serious ankle injury.
Shaw hurt himself trying to complete a catch on the boundary early on day three of the tour match against a Cricket Australia XI, snaffling the ball then rolling his ankle while attempting to stay in the field of play.
The 19-year-old’s immediate reaction was to howl in agony and grab his lower left leg, suggesting he may be in doubt for the first Test that starts at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
Shaw, who was unable to put any weight on his left leg, has been rushed to hospital for scans.
The right-hander, who top-scored for India on Thursday with an impressive 66, was carried off the field by two officials from India as Cricket Australia medico John Orchard watched on.
Shaw, who is the latest teenager to shoulder the burden of being labelled the ‘next Sachin Tendulkar’, last month became the youngest Indian to score a century on Test debut.
He is a certainty to open for India in Adelaide if fit.
