Show Preview
Saturday night footy takes us to Melbourne, as a fledgling St Kilda host a similarly fledging West Coast at Marvel Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:25pm (AEST).
Yes, yes. We know there is that other big Showdown on tonight. This won’t be the most publicised game, but hear me out – sometimes it is the under the radar games that are the better ones.
In this case, we’ll be watching a potentially over-performing St Kilda tackle a big challenge in what is an under-performing West Coast side. St Kilda’s first few weeks were very good, but they’ve faltered in successive weeks against Adelaide and GWS.
West Coast have looked rather flat for the opening month and a half of the season, but they’ll at least be heading into tonight’s clash with a win against Gold Coast under their belt (this coming after a thrashing at the hands of Geelong, though). So, neither team appear to be in the best form at the moment.
St Kilda’s recent fortnight will be a genuine worry to them; there’s no point winning if they’re not winning against the top teams.
They’ll be encouraged, however, by the fact that they were stoically not blown away by either the Cats or Giants, and their best footy is rather good – they just need to be consistent enough to tackle what will be a strong challenge.
West Coast themselves would be worried about their struggles against Gold Coast, which saw them almost relinquish a dominant lead as the Suns booted five straight goals against the premiers.
There’s a number of changes to both sides tonight. St Kilda have made a trio of swaps, with Irishman Darragh Joyce, youngster Hunter Clark and Johnathan Clarke all omitted from the side.
Nathan Brown, Luke Dunstan and Ed Phillips all return to the twenty-two – a side that is already bereft of names like Jack Steven, Jack Lonie, Jarryd Geary and Dylan Roberton.
The reigning premiers have made one change to their line-up this evening. Veteran Chris Masten has been omitted, replaced by Jake Waterman.
Prediction
St Kilda are missing a few of their best, whilst the Eagles have looked lethargic for much of the season so far. On most days, you’ll tips the Eagles purely because they are the better football team. That’s what I’m going to do, but I do honestly feel a little bit of upset potential in this one.
Nevertheless, the smart tip here in the premiers. Expect them to run away with it in the final term or thereabouts.
West Coast by 29 points.
