The St Kilda Saints face one of the toughest tasks in footy as they strive to keep their season alive – a trip to Queensland to battle the red-hot Brisbane Lions. Follow the match on The Roar with live scores from 7:25pm (AEST).

The Victorian government’s listing of some areas of Brisbane as COVID-19 ‘red zones’ owing to the recent breakout has seen this match moved from the Gabba to Metricon Stadium. It will be interesting to see how many Lions fans make the trip to the Gold Coast to see their rampaging team play.

Such is the absurdity of this season that the Saints, who have sat in the bottom four for much of the year, are suddenly in with a half-decent shout of a finals berth. Just two points outside the top eight on the back of consecutive wins over Richmond and Collingwood, Brett Ratten and his team head into the home stretch with hope rekindled – though their diabolical percentage as a result of some early-season thumpings could prove decisive.

Key to their resurgence has been the return of Rowan Marshall, the ruckman-cum-forward fixing their structure up front and providing the perfect foil for Paddy Ryder around the ground. The pair’s partnership was a huge reason behind the Saints’ run to the finals in 2020, and looms as crucial again here. Bullish midfielder Zak Jones is back from a long-term quad injury in another boost, though goalsneak Jack Higgins will miss.

Remember when the Lions were 1-3 and in trouble? Yeah, us neither. Since then, last year’s preliminary finalist has been nothing short of electric, winning 10 of their last 11 to skyrocket to third on the table. With a rock-solid backline, a dynamic forward line and a midfield packed with big names, the Lions are rightly considered one of the premiership favourites again.

Even despite reigning Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale withdrawing with a last-minute hamstring injury in Round 16, the Lions were still far too good for the Crows in Adelaide. Neale returns for this clash along with youngster James Madden, while Jarrod Berry’s return to AFL action has been short-lived and the perpetually unlucky Rhys Mathieson is again omitted.
