West Coast Eagles champion Shannon Hurn becomes the first Eagle to reach 300 games when they take on the Collingwood Magpies at the MCG. Tune into this 2018 grand final rematch with live scores on The Roar from 4:15pm (AEST).

Fittingly, Hurn reaches the milestone at the same venue and against the same opponent of his greatest achievement as a player: captaining the Eagles’ stunning come-from-behind win in the 2018 big dance.

That he is just the third Western Australian player, and first Eagle, to reach the 300-game mark is proof of its difficulty with the travel required of non-Victorian teams; that Hurn is still played some excellent footy in the twilight of his career is a testament to his resilience.

The Eagles have made some steps towards recovering from a nightmare mid-season patch with consecutive wins over Adelaide and St Kilda, but haven’t quieted the doubters over their ability to challenge the best sides in the competition. They won’t get the chance to solve that here, but a big win would at least shore up their currently ugly percentage.

The Magpies’ season has largely been a slow-moving train wreck, with club great Nathan Buckley axed as coach and the once-mighty side scraping just five wins for the season. Now well and truly in the mix for a wooden spoon – and having traded their first-round draft pick for the year to GWS to boot – things could hardly be going much worse.

Captain Scott Pendlebury’s year is over with a broken leg in another major blow, but in better news, defender Jeremy Howe is back from a serious hamstring injury, and looks set to play his first game since their last clash with the Eagles back in Round 5.
