Show Preview

It’s a top-of-the-table blockbuster to start Round 17 as Geelong captain Joel Selwood returns to face reigning premiers Melbourne who have their own skipper Max Gawn back in the frame as well. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 7:20pm (AEST).

In a match that is being touted as a Grand Final preview, Geelong will be looking to make it seven victories in a row this season against the might of the Demons.

Along with Selwood, the Cats will also regain remerging superstar Tom De Koning into the backline, after he was a late out last week.

The Cats have been red hot this season and their success comes from the versatility at either end of the ground. They have the best forward line trio in recent memory – Jeremy Cameron, Tom Hawkins and Tyson Stengle currently have 119 goals between them this season in what is the envy of every club in the competition.

If one has a down night, the other is there to pick up the slack and guide the team with a dominant performance. Melbourne’s defensive structure will be up for the challenge and it will be interesting to see how they match up.

Melbourne are making similar changes to their line-up, and welcome back their ruckman and captain, Max Gawn, from a syndesmosis injury; as well as Luke Jackson after a knee issue. Gawn is the spiritual leader of this side and his inclusion along with his partner in the ruck will be a welcome addition for the Demons.

The Demons have a task that a number of other top sides are yet to manage this season, and it is to contain the Geelong forward line. Steven May and Jake Lever are primed for the task to contain Hawkins and Cameron.

These match-ups will be the difference-maker in what will be an enticing clash this evening.
