It was a disappointing start to the season for the Giants. A two-point loss to the Brisbane Lions was not how coach Alan McConnell would have wanted his side to start the season.

When one considers all the hard yards of pre-season, it would be a difficult pill to swallow losing by such a small margin.

There were some positives though, which should keep the team morale up. Plenty of the Giants girls were able to get their hands on the ball, but perhaps were not clinical enough going forward.

Rebecca Beeson, Alyce Parker and Emma Swanson led the way claiming 18 disposals each, which should give those three the confidence going forward for the remainder of the season.

Cora Staunton led the way in front of goal for the Giants claiming two majors.

As for the Kangaroos, they could not have started their AFLW season any better. They defeated the Carlton Blues by 36 points, sending a real message to the rest of the competition.

The Kangaroos had assembled a superb list going into this campaign, but many were wondering how they would gel. Any doubts were quickly put to bed last week.

What was most impressive about coach Scott Gowans side was just how even they were. Everyone contributed.

Emma Kearney and Jessica Duffin showed their worth finding the ball 18 times each, and Emma King was also very impressive kicking two majors.

There was a quiet confidence going into the 2019 AFLW season at Arden Street, and if round one is anything to go by, you can see why.

Prediction
It is hard to look past the Kangaroos here after their impressive victory over the Blues.

They have recruited to win a flag, and they should continue to march towards that goal in this clash.

North Melbourne to prevail by 19 points.
