Captain Stephen Coniglio returns for the GWS Giants just in time for the Sydney Derby, and a clash with crosstown rivals the Sydney Swans that has serious finals ramifications. Tune in as Round 18 wraps up with live scores on The Roar from 6:10pm (AEST).

Coniglio’s form deserted him in a horror run in his first year as captain in 2020, famously being dropped for a must-win game late in the season. However, at his best, the hard-running midfielder is a crucial cog in the Giants’ midfield, and his return will be welcomed here.

The Giants’ finals push hit a major snag with an upset loss to Gold Coast last week, but they have an excellent recent record against the Swans, winning four of their last five matches. However, with star wingman Lachie Whitfield out with concussion, and important ruckman Shane Mumford also to miss, their chances of inflicting another 2-point win over their rivals like they did back in Round 5 appear slimmer than usual.

Making the job even harder, too, is the fact the Swans are soaring at the moment. If a 92-point win over the battling West Coast was impressive enough, last week’s upset win over the Western Bulldogs was even better. Having taken down a number of challengers this year, the Swans loom as a major finals dark horse – and should their push for the top four continue, they might even head into September as one of the outright favourites.

They have the luxury of going in unchanged for the second week in a row, meaning youngster James Rowbottom remains on the outer – a sign of the Swans’ enviable form and depth.
