The Melbourne Demons are out to make it nine wins from nine starts in 2021 when they take on the Carlton Blues at the MCG. Follow along with Sunday afternoon AFL here on The Roar with live scores from 3:20pm (AEST).

The Demons are in heaven. A stunning 9-0 start to the season has lifted the pressure on coach Simon Goodwin, and turned the team from a finals hopeful to a premiership contender.

Their nine-point win over Sydney last week was far from pretty, but showed the Dees’ newfound steel this year. The Demons of yore would have found a way to lose that match, yet they held firm in defence to stay perfect in 2021.

The Blues are the AFL’s resident enigma. Capable of magnificence or mediocrity in equal measure, they showed both in their loss to another flag fancy in the Western Bulldogs in Round 8. Up by as much as 27 points playing a free-flowing, exciting brand of footy, the Blues spectacularly ran out of steam in the final term, the Dogs booting eight goals in a row to run away with the match.

It will be a case of an irresistible force meeting an immovable object when Coleman Medal leader Harry McKay takes on the Dees’ stingy defence. No side has conceded fewer points in 2021 than the red and the blue, and up against the likes of Steven May and Jake Lever, the Blues’ spearhead will have a mighty challenge on his hands to continue his stirring form.
