Sayonara, Nathan Buckley. The Collingwood Magpies coach’s final game at the helm comes in the annual Queen’s Birthday match against the ladder-leading Melbourne Demons. Join The Roar to see if the Pies can send him off in style with live scores from 3:20pm (AEST).

After nine and a half years in the hot seat, Buckley shocked the footy world mid-week by announcing his resignation following this match. His time at the helm has been met with more scrutiny than nearly any other coach in AFL history, and that has only intensified as the Pies slid down the ladder to begin 2021. The run to the 2018 grand final remains his finest achievement in charge, but detractors will no doubt point to the fact that the Pies have only improved their ladder position from the previous year once – 2018 – since he took on the top job.

Off-field issues have been just as troublesome as those on it for the Magpies this year, and one can forgive Buckley for simply wanting to escape the brouhaha. A win over the premiership favourites would be a fittingly bizarre way to end his nearly 30-year stint at the AFL’s most notorious club.

Yes, you read that right – Melbourne are premiership favourites. The Pies have dominated the headlines, but the Demons are the biggest story of the season, rising from two years in the wilderness to take the competition by storm. An 11-1 record sees them sit pretty atop the ladder, a game clear of the second-placed Bulldogs; and it’s hard to see them being caught. Wingman Ed Langdon returns for this match, after missing last week’s fabulous victory over the red-hot Brisbane with concussion.

The Dees have won just two of the last eleven Queen’s Birthday matches, however, with their last victory coming back in 2017. The Pies have dished out plenty of pain in this fixture in years gone by, most famously an 83-point thrashing in 2013 that saw Mark Neeld’s torturous coaching tenure finally put out of its misery. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, no doubt the Dees will be eager for some revenge.

Melbourne’s ongoing COVID-19 situation has seen this match moved from its traditional home at the MCG to the SCG, along with all other Victorian-scheduled matches over the last fortnight. It’s expected Round 14 will see footy return to its ancestral home, though it’s yet to be determined whether crowds will be able to attend.
