The MCG will be empty as the ladder-leading Melbourne Demons face the Hawthorn Hawks looking to retake top spot on the AFL ladder. Don’t miss a moment of the action with live scores on The Roar from 7:25pm (AEST).

The AFL’s major fixture reshuffle caused by Victoria’s new COVID-19 outbreak has seen this match pushed back three to the Saturday night slot. However, the lack of crowds remains – a disappointing result for the Demons especially, who would likely have drawn a revenue-spinning crowd for this match between two MCG tenants.

It’s been a 2021 to remember for the Dees, the oft-embattled club turning for home as premiership favourites. They’ve been the AFL’s stingiest side this year, conceding just 65 points per game; while the midfield of Max Gawn, Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver is enough to give opposition coaches sleepless nights.

The loss of tough nut James Harmes with an ear infection is a blow, though it gives fringe midfielder Aaron vandenBerg the opportunity to retake a spot in the best 22 in the run in to finals.

A win here would see the Dees retake top spot from Geelong, who moved ahead following their thumping win over Fremantle on Thursday night.

The Hawks appeared to have turned a corner following their bye, with surprise wins over Sydney and GWS. However, they fell apart spectacularly last week with a thumping loss to the Dockers, just hours after it was revealed master coach Alastair Clarkson would be handing the reigns to Sam Mitchell at the end of 2022.

Injuries have decimated the backline, with emerging pair Changkuoth Jiath and Jack Scrimshaw both out. In better news, forward Mitch is back for his first game since suffering a nasty concussion at a training session during the Hawks’ bye back in Round 12.
