Two of the AFL’s biggest improvers for 2021 lock horns at the MCG as the Melbourne Demons host the Sydney Swans. Follow live scores right here on The Roar from 7:25pm (AEST).

Few expected the Swans to be challenging for finals this season, after finishing 16th in 2020. Yet after seven rounds, they sit fourth on the ladder, having beaten three of last year’s preliminary finalists.

Tom Papley was the hero in last week’s thrilling two-point win over Geelong, kicking the winning goal in the dying minutes as the Swans claimed an unlikely victory. The MCG holds no fears for John Longmire’s youthful team, having stunned reigning premiers Richmond at the home of football in Round 3.

The Demons, though, are arguably the team to beat in 2021. Undefeated and on top of the ladder for the first time since 2005, Simon Goodwin has overseen a remarkable resurgence this year. With superstar Christian Petracca signing a monster seven-year contract extension tying him to the club until at least 2029, things are going swimmingly off-field as well.

The Dees weren’t at their best in Round 7 against lowly North Melbourne, even trailing by 19 points at half time. However, a powerful second half was enough to preserve their winning streak, as well as prove their best is a fearsome proposition for any opponent.
