Show Preview

In a truly intriguing matchup that has huge season and finals implications, the Port Adelaide Power host the Brisbane Lions at the Adelaide Oval. Join The Roar from 4:40pm (AEST) for live scores and a blog of the game.

Today’s matchup will almost rest entirely on one thing, and one thing alone: which Port Adelaide side will show up.

Port were magnificent in their round 1 win over Melbourne.

They were equally bullish and dominant in their last-start win over Adelaide in the Showdown.

The issue though is that as they discussed in the lead up to round 16, the inconsistency of Port in bringing that level of play means that they find themselves in a scrap to even appear in September.

How Ken Hinkley can find a way to bottle Port’s best so that he can bring it out whenever he needs might go some way to lifting the Port into contender territory.

It may even assist Hinkley in securing his own job.

Brisbane, on the other hand, are starting to very much deliver on that consistency, and they should be liking their chances of getting a top 4 finish.

The arrival of Eric Hipwood in that quarter and a half against Melbourne was a turning point for the forward and his team, while last week’s win away to the highly fancied Giants means that the Lions are the real deal.

They have yet another tricky road trip here, but if the Lions can match last week’s enthusiasm and execution, they are in with a shot.

Brisbane are last-start winners over Port, however, Port had won the previous four encounters between the two sides, so history doesn’t help when it comes to indications for today’s match.

Prediction
I’m going solely on ladder position, rather than form, because the Jekyll and Hyde show that is Port Adelaide makes it impossible to know which Port side I’m tipping.

Brisbane by 12, but that’s if Port do their usual trick of not backing up from a Showdown.
