Match result:

The St Kilda Saints have stolen the win late in a tight contest against the Fremantle Dockers at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Under the roof, late goals to Jack Steven and Josh Bruce ended the Dockers’ final hopes, a three-point victory for Brett Ratten’s third win as interim coach.

St Kilda were up early and took a 12-point lead late in the first term and a one-point lead into the main break.

In the third, it was a see-sawing ball game, Fremantle had plenty of chances late in the term to put a couple of goals on and ultimately those misses possibly cost them the win.

Still, the Dockers were ahead at the break.

It took until the 17-minute mark of the final term for a goal to be scored, Brandon Matera slotting a clutch goal for the Dockers.

However, they could not hold onto the nine-point lead.

Steven’s third goal came with a run around snap in the 23rd minute, while a Bruce lead, mark and straight kick was the match-winner.

Jake Carlisle took two big grabs in the final term, and spoiled another, his day in defence was solid.

Three games in the Saints jumper and it was the first win for Dan Hannebery, who finished with 23 disposals, two goals – an influential inclusion in the team.

Steven kicked three goals on return, his first game since round six. He admitted to Fox Footy post-match that he was still a “little fat and unfit” but appreciated the faith from Brett Ratten that he could play a role up forward.

Seb Ross (28 disposals, 9 tackles), Jack Billings (27 disposals) and Hunter Clark (26 disposals) were good for the Saints as well.

Nat Fyfe battled hard with 35 disposals and two goals, Ed Langdon (28 disposals, 1 goal) and Brad Hill (27 disposals) also had good afternoons.

Aaron Sandilands and Sean Darcy dominated the ruck contest, hit-outs 58-18 in their favour.

Nick Coffield’s day ended early with a right shoulder injury. Josh Bruce also had a cut above his eye tended to.

Next up for the Saints is a Saturday afternoon clash against the Blues at the MCG, while Fremantle host Essendon on Saturday night.

Spirits are up at both clubs, so how will the St Kilda Saints fare when they host top-eight hopefuls the Fremantle Dockers at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon? Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 1:10pm (AEST).

For the Saints, caretaker coach Brett Ratten is looking to improve his 2-1 record to 3-1 with a win today. Meanwhile, big-name recruit Dan Hannebery returns from injury and it’s an opportunity for Saints fans to see four-time Trevor Barker Award winner Jack Steven back in AFL action.

In the Fremantle camp, a win today will keep finals chances alive. Though, at four points and percentage outside the eight, they face an uphill battle to do so.

Last weekend the Saints had a 22-point loss to the Adelaide Crows, while the Dockers had a most impressive victory over the Geelong Cats.

On Saturday night in Adelaide, Ratten suffered his first loss as interim coach, however, the team battled hard all night and kept the margin uncomfortably low for Crows’ fans.

Rowan Marshall continued to impress, while Tim Membrey kicked three goals and Jack Billings, Jack Steele and Hunter Clark all had 26 disposals.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Fremantle hosted the Cats and surprised many with a huge 34-point win against the up-and-down Cats.

After a whole lot of talk through the week about Ross Lyon, the players came out and staged one big upset. The Dockers were 15 points down at quarter-time, but turned that around to a lead at half-time and barely missed a beat from there.

The Cats, as expected, slotted a couple of goals early in the half, but it was all one-way traffic in the last term as Fremantle kicked away to the victory.

Numerous changes to the Saints side this weekend, five in total.

Jack Newnes, Jack Steven, Dan Hannebery, Blake Acres and Ben Paton all return to the side.

After time away to focus on his mental health, Steven will play his first AFL game since round six. Hannebery has also missed a lot of senior footy this year through injury and the latest a bout of gastro, however will want to finish his first season at the Saints on the field.

Jade Gresham (eye socket) and Doulton Langlands (groin) will miss the match with injuries.

Matthew Parker, Daniel McKenzie and Nathan Brown have all been omitted from the line-up, the latter due to match-ups with the Fremantle small forward line.

No changes for Fremantle, they’ll go in with the same 22 who beat Geelong.

The last time these two teams played was in round three. At Optus Stadium there were multiple momentum swings, however, the Dockers held onto the lead for a five-point win.

Prediction
After three matches Brett Ratten is already making a claim for the coaching gig at St Kilda; a couple more wins to finish off the season and he will be a popular man with the fans.

Fremantle simply have to win to remain in September conversations as finals hopes are not completely dashed just yet.

Although a percentage boosting win would be handy for the Dockers, the Saints – who are favourites here – have been fighting hard and will make it a tight finish.

Fremantle by 4 points.
