Beveridge brought to tears by Boyd retirement, hits out at journalist

An emotional Luke Beveridge has paid tribute to Tom Boyd, who announced his retirement at just 23 amid injury and mental health issues.
The Western Bulldogs coach briefly broke down during his press conference as he spoke of Boyd.

The former number one draft pick was one of the heroes of the Bulldogs’ drought-breaking premiership win in 2016, producing memorable performances in the thrilling finals campaign and particularly the Grand Final.

Though Boyd only featured in 52 games for the club and will forgo the remaining two years of his contract, Beveridge says the former Giant will forever be a “Bulldogs legend” for his efforts.

Media and social media scrutiny followed Boyd after he joined the Bulldogs in a blockbuster trade with GWS and factored into his mental health issues.

Beveridge took aim at the wider media for the focus that had been on Boyd, and in particular, an unnamed journalist who he says overstepped the mark in his coverage of the forward.
