Good signs for new NRL TV deal

I did use the indefinite article “a” cheese grater… not “my” cheese grater
it is actually a line from from the movie “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane”. I just thought it was an apt description of their commentary.

Good signs for new NRL TV deal

Any deal that excludes Gus and Rabs is a winner. Listening to their commentary is like masturbating with a cheese grater; it gets the job done, but it is painful and scars

Good signs for new NRL TV deal

I watched the replay, I watched the slow motion replay.. I watched frame by frame; Robbie landed L shoulder first, impacting slightly inverted from a lateral (not vertical) adduction. Head impact was secondary to shoulder impact; definitely a high coup injury risk.
If you want to get technical, the shoulder striking the ground one (1) frame pre body could be defined as past horizontal, but that is getting ridiculous. We are talking about Robbie here… old school tuff player

Robbie Farah in doubt for Origin 2 with a shoulder injury

That’s a big call Muzz… especially just after they just beat the Blues

As for the refereeing; I keep saying that it was one of the best efforts I can remember. I am actually surprised either side is claiming bias.
I posted this before but it is relevant:

3.55 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty

Keep in mind it was only what was shown on the telecast… those at the game may have seen it differently.

PRICHARD: Cronk a puppeteer in a Maroon jersey

Right there with you

I went even further… streamed the game through Toronto.CA (geolock) and streamed ABC live through VLC player onto the TV with the delay set so they were syncronised. No commercials, no moronic commentary.
Only issue is the replay…. cant edit out stupidity!

Five questions from State of Origin I

Yes, caught that…. was torn between “Wow, the niggle is gone” and “they shouldn’t be nice to each other”; it’ Origin
Thank you Hodges for the head tap….. homeostasis achieved.
I will say this is the first time the Qld’ers have had more niggle in them than the Blues… Wonder what was missing???

Five questions from State of Origin I

I understand your pain but I think you may have lost a little objectiveness here. The Slater one was definitely questionable and borderline morally wrong but the Hodges one was within limits… and we are talking of Robbie here.

I wrote elsewhere that I actually felt it was a great refereeing display.. of course with exceptions

Here is what I found on examination of the refereeing:

3.55 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty
4.08 –Slater has foot on line for kick returned = missed by ref
4.19 –Qld penalty for NSW flopping in tackle = no flop
5.09 NSW in side 10 = no penalty
7.14 Slater try disallowed = questionable
8.35 NSW offside from kick =questionable
10.43 NSW inside the 10 = no penalty
10.50 Qld player taken out in goal = no penalty
11.51 Qld forward pass = no penalty
12.15 NSW inside the 10 = no penalty
16.30 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty
16.55 High tackle from Qld = no penalty
17.10 Qld player taken out = questionable
21.45 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty
22.23 NSW inside the 10 = no penalty
22.33 Qld knock on (play the ball) = NSW kneed the ball
23.48 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty
27.09 NSW knock in the play the ball = No penalty
29.47 NSW head high tackle on Qld = no penalty
29.53 Qld player taken out = no penalty
31.46 NSW player lying in the play the ball = no penalty
32.21 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty
33.33 NSW interfere with the play the ball = no penalty
35.24 Qld hold down NSW in the tackle = no penalty
37.27 Qld 3rd man in tackle after held called = no penalty
38.47 NSW forward pass = no penalty
41.20 Qld holding in tackle = no penalty
42.37 NSW inside the 10 = no penalty
33.00 NSW penalty taken in the air = Questionable
44.14 Qld forward pass = no penalty
49.03 NWS inside the 10 = no penalty
51.00 Qld Chicken wing tackle attempt missed = no penalty
54.26 NSW inside the 10 = no penalty
58.25 Qld hold down in the tackle = no penalty
61.46 NSW inside the 10= no penalty
72.55 NSW inside the 10 = no penalty
77.16 NSW dummy runner as Sheppard = no penalty
77.30 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty
77.41 Qld inside the 10 = no penalty
79.34 NSW (Klemmer) Punch on grounded Qld player (Parker) = no penalty

Note that this is only from the broadcast view which means you only get a segment of the action so heaps may have been missed. Also it is my interpretation of the rules which may be questionable…. and I am a Qld’er

Love your passion NSWfan

Queensland draw first Origin blood

I am still out to lunch on that one…. was he having a shot at Robbie and we all missed it, or was it a classic Wally synaptic failure?

Five questions from State of Origin I

Got to say I thought the refereeing was better than usual. Sure, there were a few soft and dodgy calls but I don’t think it was biased one way or another. The 10 meter ranged from 8-12 but in general was acceptable
Good to see both sides generally respecting the authority (read, no Gallen/Bird) and it was interesting to see Cam smith shut down with clear responses from the ref
I don’t think either side could claim aggrieved status, which is surprising, considering it was a 1 point ball game
Qld’ers may have reacted otherwise to the Slater non-try if they had lost though.

Five questions from State of Origin I

Exactly what I meant with the bizarre… bipolar commentary.

My favorite was claiming that Cronk targeted T-Rex’s forearm to milk a penalty??

Five questions from State of Origin I

Yep… got that one 79.34 minutes in
It was worse as it was not part of an affray or confrontation… just a simple coward act

You are surprised it was not mentioned?

I said it another article… worst commentary ever; more that just NSW watch the game. maybe 9 need to get that through their heads

Queensland draw first Origin blood

I used to do the volume down ABC commentary up thing… but if you want to watch a replay; you have the Gus/Rabs incompetence audio as default.

Seriously though; 9 has to do something about it… it’s so poor!

Five questions from State of Origin I

Fitler is just plain embarrassing; to himself and his state
Maybe Fatty just for entertainment?… the man could not be impartial in SOO, but he does come out with a few good ones

Five questions from State of Origin I

Insightful question RC.
I have to agree. As part of my yearly SOO preparation I watch every game since 2006 (yes; I have no life). I have noticed that Gus throws the “there all bunched behind the play….out on their feet etc.. disposable lines out regularly.
My favorite is “Qld have had all the possession but have only scored xxxx”, inevitably Qld score with a couple of set.
I can feel the screams of thousands of NSW supporters “shut up Gus!”

I haven’t interpreted Gus’s comments as making himself favorable to Qld, rather positioning NSW as the underdogs overcoming Qld dominance.. which I have no issue with; it makes for a good story line.

What really annoys me is that he calls Thaiday a coward, Inglis a cheat and liar and jumps on Smith for his “diplomacy” publicly but nothing to balance the commentary. Gallen is “strong” Bird is “showing passion” etc.
Not a Qld whinge, but this game is televised outside NSW and internationally… it is simply a poor professional image for the game… unless you bleed Blue; which I respect

Five questions from State of Origin I

Was this the worst commentary effort in the history of SOO?
So sick of Gus and Ray bagging the Blues to death when they are off the boil. They just dig in the boot and go on and on and on. It starts a narrative that is just negative.
The bias… come on, even the most hardened Blue must acknowledge that last night’s call was basically a NSW commentary. If Qld were firing, then the Blues were useless… If they were on top, then they were amazing; very uneven.
Don’t get me started on Wally (the balance?). Love the man, but he’s trying so hard to be impartial and remove NSW hatred for him that he is almost anti-Qld… plus he adds some bizarre comments at times
Ray going on (and on) about every 50/50 call against the Blues, with his usual jibes and insinuation while glossing over anything faintly favorable to NSW
Conversely, how great is Sterlo; most impartial commentator in the NRL. While the game in on, I am the most biased Qld’er fan…. Every call against us is unfair, every try they get is cheating and of course the refs are Blues supporters. However, if Sterlo makes an anti-Qld call; I accept it immediately. For me he has the integrity and impartiality need to deliver good commentary.
We deserve better

Five questions from State of Origin I

Any argument is bung when the source material is the Courier Mail; it is always fallacious, bias or thinly veiled sponsor propaganda.
