Thanks for the article Jeff.

I must say the last two weeks of the Lions tour have brought out the very worst in the game. Quite frankly I don’t care who wins the last match and I won’t be watching it.

In contrast the Olympic Sevens has been a godsend. I was glued to both the men’s and woman’s comps, so many good games and worthy winners in Fiji and New Zealand and great sportsmanship throughout the whole tournament. My highlights though were the Argentinian men beating South Africa (how much heart!), the Japanese women playing the USA (they were totally outsized but just kept on coming at the US) and of course the Fiji women’s team who I’m sure will be challenging the NZ team for the #1 spot very soon. Can we please set up a go fund me page for them!

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

Great article Paulo.
Hearing what the Tongan team had to go through just to put a side on the paddock last Saturday was heart breaking. I know Covid restrictions were partly to blame but I was pretty angry when I heard some northern hemisphere clubs had AGAIN dissuaded their Pacifica players not to play for their country.
Maybe the All Blacks, Wallabies and Spring Boks need to stop playing England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France until the European clubs are brought into line. Unfortunately not that simple but the European Clubs need an almighty kick up the pants!
I grew up in a small town outside of Wellington with Fijian, Tongan, Samoan, Maori and Pakeha kids. Even though I was the short skinny redhead boy I was blessed to be surrounded by so many different cultures. Fiji, Tonga and Samoa will always have a special place in my heart.
As for Saturdays game the All Blacks were dammed if played and dammed if they didn’t. The Pacifica teams need to be supported including playing the All Blacks and the Wallabies a lot more over the coming years. There will be lots of blowouts initially but eventually it’ll become a lot closer. Look at how Argentina have improved.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T! What can rugby learn from Aretha Franklin?

What a great match. I thought the weather had killed it but credit to both teams for striving for a result. Obviously as a Kiwi I’m over the moon and so proud the boys but I love watching the Indian squad as well. The Beige Brigade rug might be a bit smelly by the end if the week, but it’s not coming off!

New Zealand crowned World Test Champions after shocking collapse by India

Tipping panel week 15: Fearless prediction week

I’m predicting another Kiwi clean sweep. It’s my headache week with the Hurricanes vs Force. Like many other Kiwi’s living in Perth it’s always a conundrum when your old Super province plays the Force. I decided way back in 2006 that whomever was the home side that year, that’s who’s jumper I’d wear. So the Hurricanes strip will worn proudly tomorrow……..but secretly go the Force!

I feel your pain Geoff.

(Wellington) Lions, Hurricanes, Western Force, Fremantle Dockers, Black Caps…

The Wrap: New Zealand sides ruthlessly hunt Super Rugby bonus points

Good article Geoff.

I was at the Force game on Friday and it was definitely the Highlanders speed across the Park which was the difference. The Force were gritty in defence as usual and did well to deny to Highlanders the bonus point but when they tried to match the Highlanders speed in attack things came unstuck with quite a few missed passes. In saying that their two tries we well worked, so something to focus on in the coming weeks.

The Wrap: New Zealand sides ruthlessly hunt Super Rugby bonus points

Yeah totally agree Micko they weren’t the best for a rectangular field but at least at Perth Stadium you are looking down into the action from most of the seats, and then there is the two bars on the third level!

Wallabies lock in Bledisloe Cup, Rugby Championship fixtures for 2021

Great news. I was at the 2019 game and while the AB’s couldn’t win it was an amazing night with sell-out crowd. Perth Stadium is just awesome for watching any sport, AFL cricket rugby, bring it on.

Wallabies lock in Bledisloe Cup, Rugby Championship fixtures for 2021

Hi nroko, we obviously have differing view which is fine. To me selling off the 12.5% just really grates and I’d hate to see it eventually get to the debacle we are seeing with the major soccer clubs in the UK in future years.

I think professional sport in general needs a reset. None of the sports appear to be sustainable in their current form. I’m happy to pay a subscription to watch Super Rugby, etc, I not happy to pay a subscription to see any national play though, I think we’ve lost out way there.

New Zealand Rugby votes in favour of selling stake to US equity firm

Hi nroko, yes I made quite a few assumptions, but can I point out so have you.

I base my comments on historical comments from the NZRFU about the previous broadcasting deals and the AIG deal that money would trickle down the unions and money would be put away for a rainy day.

Now maybe it was, I haven’t looked over the books, and maybe Covid has sucked away at the last dregs of the savings but then again maybe the NZRFU didn’t manage those earlier funds properly either and may not manage the $387 million going forward.

Mate whoever said fan ownership meant providing expertise? Shareholders of public companies don’t run the companies they buy into, they do have a say through voting rights at annual and extraordinary meetings though.

If NZRFU need additional expertise then there are other ways to get that expertise rather than selling off 12.5%. One is not necessarily tied in the other.

New Zealand Rugby votes in favour of selling stake to US equity firm

So lets fast forward say five to tens years.

We’ve signed the deal with Silverlake and they’ve helped us up the revenue a bit but they are (rightfully) taking their share and the $387 million has run dry. The extra revenue helps a bit but the elite players are getting paid more, the provincial unions are still making a loss, the All Blacks are now playing 10-11 months out of the year, mostly offshore, an All Blacks jumper now costs close to $300 but it come seven colours and has 20 sponsor logos on it and worst of all we’re still losing player overseas so they can retire at grand old age of 35.

What now? Do we sell another 12.5%?

New Zealand Rugby votes in favour of selling stake to US equity firm

Thanks Potsie, some interesting points to ponder. I know this is a commercial deal and there will be confidentiality issues but there is a unique public interest in this deal and I think the NZRFU should be a lot more transparent.

I’m favouring the fan ownership model the players association are mooting. Sign me up and sell me shares, but then maybe I’m just a “legacy fan” now 😢

Thanks for missing the entire point of the story Anon.

By your way of thinking then England also got a pathetic 240 and also deserved to lose. Funnily enough still a draw.

It was a great match played by two great teams.

Final outrage valid, but also a veneer for the bitter

Thanks for the article David.

After two days I must admit I’m still numb at the result. It was an amazing game of cricket and regardless of pool play results, the last four years dominance by England and boundaries scored no side could win the game. It was that titanic.

Congrats to England. You can see how much the world championship means to the team and the country, they really value it.

To my fellow Kiwis heads up. I know it hurts especially since this was a once in a generation team, a champion team in more ways than one! Just remember though, our boys were not defeated, they stood up and fought against the best in the world and were not found wanting.

Final outrage valid, but also a veneer for the bitter

I think its a good balance for the first two tests of the year and good to see a few of the debutants rewarded for good Super Rugby form.

I’m still trying to work out how many of the new caps from Japan last year made the cut.

All Blacks name 39-man squad for Rugby Championship

Meanwhile the All Blacks team has just been named. Strong squad.

James O’Connor lines up Wallabies return after signing with the Reds

Dear oh dear brand O’Connor us back.

Should we have a sweepstake on how long he’ll hang around after the world cup?

What ever happened to loyalty and respect for the jersey?!

Yip was a great game of cricket as well. Fantastic catch by Mr Bolt.

Nine talking points from the Super Rugby quarter-finals

Have to agree Taylorman although I think both games will be a craker next weekend.

This weeks games definitely didn’t disappoint.

Nine talking points from the Super Rugby quarter-finals

Really Waxhead. I remember quite a different 11 years.

Didn’t make finals but always pushed the Kiwi teams, especially the Crusaders.

And in 2018 we had the largest average crowd numbers after we were dumped from Super Rugby ????

Chiefs annihilate the disappointing Rebels to most certainly qualify for the playoffs

The Rebels experiment has been a colossal failure. No crowds, now bankrupt and their Wallabies are looking clueless a few months out from a world cup.

If the Force had survived Perth Stadium would have been packed last night regardless of the result, although I seriously doubt a Force side would have gave up 50 plus points in front of the sea of blue.

Aussie rugby is dying, slowly and painfully. What’s next?

One hand, one bounce, catch!

Waratahs end Australia's Super Rugby curse

Great game. Another bruising one for both sides. Looking forward to the next game vs Rebels. Will be a good warm up for the Force before they become the first Aussie side to take out a Kiwi opponent in two years?
