Put it this way. The game would be a lot healthier in Australia if the Rebels were never a thing. Whether they cut them or not, at this point it’s too little too late.

Wallaby signs with English giants in new setback for reeling Rebels

Who knows how many players we could have kept in the country without the drain that is the Rebels?

I agree that RU’s future in Australia looks grim and that cricket has a much more stable base. But, so far as cricket is concerned, I’m looking at where the IPL is heading and what it could be in the future. There’s nothing to stop the BCCI turning the IPL into Major League Baseball. i.e. 30+ franchises, 150+ regular season games then playoffs. I see players permanently contracted to IPL franchises with international tournaments played in the off season and most countries rarely, if ever, playing test cricket. India has the financial muscle to do it and they could care less how many toes they step on in the process.

How will we not have quality players on the bench? The guy is going to play at a top program in one of the best Rugby competitions in the world. You cant say either of those things about the Rebels.

I think we may be witnessing the last generation of Wallabies to play their football in Australia. The growth of Rugby in Europe and Japan will bring so many financial resources to bear that it doesn’t really matter if RA are well administered or not. And I’m fine with it. Nobody cares that most of the Boomers or the Socceroos play at overseas clubs. We are happy that they are competing against and learning from the best in the business. I expect Rugby and Cricket to go the same way eventually.

The vast majority of cricket fans on the planet don’t agree with you. There’s a reason all the money is in T20 and Australians should get used to that fact.

Tradition trumps dollars: Australia will never embrace T20 cricket like Tests despite 'poor cousin' raking in big bucks

I’d be more sympathetic to an expanded club competituon based off of existing clubs than inventing brand new franchises. Just not sure there are enough that have the finances to go fully professional.

More people went to watch Shute Shield than ARC and that’s nominally a lower tier. People don’t go to games because of what tier level they are. They go because they are attached to their team’s brand. Reds and Waratahs, even Randwick and University are established brands historically and culturally. People don’t have that connection with new franchises.

That money is already spent. They been dipping into advances on that just to keep the clowns paid at the current circus

What does it matter what tier it is?

That’s fine. But Blackberry got replaced by the iPhone, not the Nokia. This domestic league stuff is the Nokia when it comes to Rugby. It’s going back to something we tried twice before and it didn’t work either time.
Ask yourself what South Africa did when they left Super Rugby. They went straight into a new competition that included franchises from multiple countries playing each other in a league format. They didn’t go back to play Curry Cup. And the Curry Cup is 10 times the competition than anything RA has the ability to set up.
My solution, for what it’s worth, we ditch 2 franchises like NZ asked us to do and we go all in on a trans tasman Super Rugby. It’s the only viable solution.

Put it this way. How many profitable days does say the Gabba get out of test cricket? 3 at max? Big Bash hands them 5 more. Do you think advertisers pay more during the day, or at night during prime time? What about the richest, most successful sports leagues in the world? Are they bilateral international series or are they domestic leagues? And what resembles them most Big Bash or Test cricket. I’m not saying Test cricket isn’t sustainable in Australia. But the potential of T20 is far higher

And yeah, SA just did. So did the WI.

Tradition trumps dollars: Australia will never embrace T20 cricket like Tests despite 'poor cousin' raking in big bucks

Why? Because I don’t like the “we need to save test cricket”/ “T20 sucks” articles. To me it comes off as snobbery. Like you said, test cricket is fine in Australia. If other countries don’t wanna play it they don’t wanna play it. We cant force them to like what we like. T20 allows the 2nd tier nations to support a test team. I don’t see the point of turning up our noses at it. The players don’t turn their nose up at it. The rest of the world don’t turn their nose up at it. I just think Australian cricket fans are stuck in their ways and stamping their feet at a change that is a foregone conclusion. What I think we should do is accept the world as it is, not how we wish it would be, and move forward on that basis.

SR is the only fully professional competition below Test level that has a history of being sustainable in Australia. Why would you throw out something that has worked for something that has never worked?

Nice job burying your head in the sand. I’m sure NZ or SA are happy playing an extra test. Let’s see if their players turn up to it if it conflicts with the Dubai T20 international.

Great, we can play England every year.

Yeah, we’ve tried doing that twice and it was an expensive failure both times. I’m sure you’re aware of the definition of madness.

Samu wasn’t developed by the Rebels tho

Guys like Rob Leota dont understand that RA isnt making a choice between 4 and 5 SR franchises. Their choice is between 4 and 0 SR franchises. Because thats where Super Rugby is headed if RA continues to kick the can down the road and avoid the hard but obvious decision. There is already no money left and there will eventually be no professional rugby in Australia if they dont cut the Rebels now.

Can’t imagine why he hasn’t considered Super Rugby

Manu tells Roosters he's leaving for lucrative rugby deal - but club lock down replacement

Concrete over all Rugby clubs and turn them into something useful like a car park. Sydney needs more parking.

Leaked document says RA out to 'destroy Super Rugby' and 'turn members against each other' as Rebels' pain comes to light

Agreed. I’ve often complained that Super Rugby’s main problem is it cant decide what it wants to be. Does it want to be the best comp it can afford to be? In which case it should ditch the eligibility requirements. Or does it want to be a development comp for test Rugby? In which case dont be surprised when they dont get 100% buy in from the public.

“There’s 100s that support Rugby in Sydney…” LOL! Freudian slip.

Agree with you, but think that NZ and Oz should be in the same comp. No conferences. That was a disaster last time we tried it.
