Personally I can see Syria winning handily,

They seem to have self belief which Aus teams to have been in most games bereft of for some years.

I hope I am wrong but.

The Roar’s A-League expert tips and predictions: Round 1

Added to that there are rumblings from the EPL owners (albeit faint) of the Premier League dispensing with the inconvenience of automatic promotion and relegation.

The league table is the only metric that counts

And of course the adherents of the P/R Cargo Cult never actually explain where the money is coming from.

The league table is the only metric that counts

IIRC correctly some second tier clubs lived in terror of being promoted to the old NSL.

Western Sydney Wanderers can excel despite Poppa's shock exit

Perhaps they could do a MyFootballClub/Ebbsfleet thing and turn the selections and tactics over to the members?

So far no Roar A-League Tipping Comp has been set up. Crisis or stuff up? You decide.

The ramble: Boxing, and why hasn’t the A-League started yet?

Someone on Guardian Football Weekly suggested Mooy was the best player from Australia ever to grace the EPL.

Aaron the Mooy-siah

Simon Kuper reflected on the phenomena of the churn of fans in Soccernomics. People fall in and out of their love affair with any code. There are lots of factors at play. Not the least is that there are so many alternatives and you can’t watch/read/listen to everything. You can have too much of a good thing.

I spend quite a lot of time these days at sites like The Blizzard and When Saturday Comes. The articles there are on a varied amount of topics, and are usually serious and well written.

Personally I find the videos here quite intrusive and I would like to see a rating system for comments at least – even if it’s “like” only per the Grauniad’s CiF.

Where have all The Roar's old readers gone?

You forgot to to include the para about where they should plant the money trees…

A new system for the Australian football pyramid

re: Global Sports Ventures

1) A real estate developer who sees things no one else can (eg “. “What we saw [in Australia] was a lot of people were playing things like street cricket,” Pandya says, noting that many of the participants were Americans.” – I haven’t seen kids play pick up game of cricket in a park for years let alone any Seppos having a hit.)

2) An identified market of less than 1% of the US population – mostly newly arrived migrants most of whom are desperate to assimilate themselves into ‘murrican culture.

3) No grounds to play on.

What could go wrong?

The A-League needs to seize its opportunities right now

Very good article…

It’s all the refs' fault, right? Here are the actual facts

I hope you reflected, while watching the Matildas play, on the wonderful pioneering work of the AFL in getting the WAFL going and making it possible for the distaff side to play sport.

It's time to build a bridge between old soccer and new football

Did you mean to use “GIGO”?

For what you want FIFA to do is garbage. It would mean the end of professional football in this country for the foreseeable future.

Unless, of course, you are a hugely wealthy billionaire who can bankroll the code for 20 years.

FFA get reprieve as FIFA intervention delayed until next month

Interestingly there has never been a person knighted specifically for their services to Rugby League.

There are a couple of UK and NZ knights who played or have been involved with RL but their awards were for their other activities.

Arise Sir Bellamy, Sir Mascord?

Simon Kuper has written extensively on spectator churn. People stop attending football matches (and other sports) for all sorts of reasons.

I would say spectator numbers in Australia for football are very much a creature of scheduling, weather grim transport to venues in Sydney and Brisbane and increasingly cost.

The fluctuations in the attendances over the whole season are not statistically significant.

Call a life guard, the A-League is treading water

I would have thought the greatest inhibition to Ice Hockey in Australia is the lack of rinks.

Too slow: Why football will never dominate Australia

Apostasy and heresy is rife it seems. Auto-da-fé for youse all.

Too slow: Why football will never dominate Australia

Cricket has done more than pay Tasmania lip service. They even get some international games.

It’s time for the FFA to dream, build a dam - and forget the numbers

Yep. It’s the football silly season.

FFA Memo: Vacant positions, apply within

Wikipedia has it right:

“The current system has been criticised for being open to abuse. National teams can maintain a higher average score by playing fewer friendly matches, particularly against weaker opponents. For example, Switzerland were seeded for the 2014 World Cup draw, largely thanks to only playing three friendly matches in the previous year. Switzerland would have reduced their rating if they had played any more friendlies, as their average score was greater than the maximum possible score from winning a friendly match against the top-ranked nation.

Romania were one of the surprise seeds for the 2018 World Cup preliminary draw after taking advice from a consultant and playing only one friendly in the year before the draw.

Lastly, the use of regional strength multiplier in the ranking determination formula has been accused of further reinforcing and perpetuating the bias for and against certain regions. FIFA’s use of regional multiplier has been cited as a primary reason why most teams in AFC and CONCACAF have significantly lower FIFA rankings compared to their Elo rating based rankings.”

The discounts for confeds other than CONMEBOL are UEFA 1% and all other confeds 15%

For anyone who can stand it the method is set out here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Rankings#Current_calculation_method

Australia slide down in new FIFA rankings

Well I don’t like vodka anyway.

If we’ve got to boycott a FIFA World Cup 2018 and 2022 seem the ones we should not be at.
