You never see kids playing anything in the streets these days. Or in the parks for that matter except as part of formal coaching sessions.

When I wore a lad we used play pick up games of cricket in the street and even twenty years ago there were children who played a game regularly in our local reserve. Doesn’t happen any more.

I’d say parents who let their kids play in the actual street like we used to would be up on neglect charges if “anything” happened.

Play equipment in parks sits mostly unused except perhaps for a few teens mooning around on the swings at dusk and later. Council rangers and the cops see to it that such elements are moved on.

How many basketball and netball hoops are set up on garage gables after Christmas and then ignored for months and years by the occupants and their offspring – possibly because of complaints by neighbours about the noise of the ball being bounced.

How many backyard pools sit unused after the kids reach their teens except by Dad who feels that he ought to have a dip because he’s cleaned the bloody thing (again).

And in the park nearby us there are beautifully maintained tennis courts which are barely used even though the only price is that you have to go and ask at a nearby house for the keys.

The Thais also play Sepak takraw (kick volleyball) which would probably give them great technique that would crossover to football.

Kids are expensive.

Even Scouting has fees high enough to put some people off – $400 per annum to just to attend meetings and then there’s the cost of uniforms, several weekend camps (including transporting children to them) and the various large scale events both in Australia and overseas.

The cost of parents’ time in making community groups like Scouts function is never factored in. Is this a factor in football?

One of my daughters also participated in the local Gang Show – which was also several hundred dollars all up.

Why don't we have transfer fees in football in Australia?

I’m sure that nice Mr Malcayman Trumble said we’d all have NBN by the end of 2016,

I don’t want to be ageist but Bob Gordon is very old. If he carks will his kids be keen to continue ownership?

Who could be the A-League's next expansion teams?

A lot of us wished and wished and even clicked our heels for the comp to be moved to Spring/Summer/Early Autumn. There are clearly known knowns (ie. hot weather) which were not properly taken into account and unknown unknowns (eg. the tip ‘n’ run comp, and possibly, ALFW) which were not even contemplated.

On the eve of one of the hottest working days of the year with dud opposition, I reckon 8k+ is very good.

Molly,

Ignorance is bliss or to put it another way a new definition for “trumpery”.

If you had read the article you would find that it is in fact well written with concise arguments.

Could we have the players outfitted in lingerie please?

Could Thunderball be football's answer to Twenty20 cricket?

I am a cricket, ie not T(ip ‘n’ Run)/20, fan but crowing about Australia dominating cricket is a bit much.

FFS most of the opponents are third world countries and/or economic basket cases and/or have small populations.

In many the actual participation rates are not really significant. Plus both political and sporting administrations in those countries are often corrupt to the core.

In any event my understanding is that cricket’s revenues are largely underpinned by India which is a bit of a medium to long term risk factor.

The new A-League broadcast deal is good for all of us

Yes – in all possible meanings of the term.

I dunno. I watched the last quarter. If you asked me the fix was in. FMD Bulldogs? More like Fine Cotton.

So does this win qualify them for the AFL Asian Champions League or the Club World Cup? It would seem a bit of a let down if this was all there is.

The elephant in the room – and it is a big one, what if the fracturing of the media landscape results in a greatly diminished offer after 2022?

Promotion and relegation in the A-League would do more harm than good

A very good point which the money tree fantasists seem to ignore.

Rugby league must expand or risk extinction

You would have big clubs spending big

You really have no idea do you? Are you familiar with the concept of “return on investment”? Do you understand that there is no such thing as a money tree?

Promotion and relegation in the A-League would do more harm than good

Non-salary capped A1 and A2 leagues would be a disaster.

Do we really want a league like the Bundesliga where the same club wins the league 47.16% of the time?

Promotion and relegation in the A-League would do more harm than good

Nemisis

You make a lot of big assumptions there. I am very interested in the A-League and travel a reasonable distance to watch “my team” as often as I can. I have also made an effort to go and watch my local NPL club play in the last few weeks. I subscribe to Foxtel and watch at least some of almost every A-League game during a season. So I am committed to club football I would suggest.

I am not against P/R per se. It’s just that at the current time I cannot see how it would be viable. The main question I have is where is the money going to come from. The people who fund the A-L clubs and their staff are entitled to the financial comfort of the current system. Without it most of them would depart the scene.

I don’t think the people who clamour for P/R have any concept of the cost of running an A-League club even with a salary cap.

Promotion and relegation in the A-League would do more harm than good

What a dumb argument. According to that why have state leagues or any grassroots football? Lets just give it all up and only have the A-League and nothing else.

To be quite frank amatuer and semi-professional sports clubs exist for two main reasons (1) to provide a pastime for people with many levels of skills in an organised and safe manner and (2) to provide a pathway for some participants to the top, professional, tier as an alternative to the top tier CoEs, academies etc.

Of these the first is probably the most important. I was involved in the set up of an amatuer sports club some years ago. Our motivation was to provide a sports activity to the population in our area. We entered the third tier of a provincial competition and after a couple of years the club was promoted to the second level. Our team got slaughtered every week and the club was relegated back to the third tier. Promotion nearly killed the club. Nobody enjoyed it. Financially promotion was disaster. We didn’t magically attract additional support or sponsorships. Likewise I see the Hemel Stags, an RL club in the UK, are having a great deal of angst following promotion. They provide an object lesson of the dangers of unregulated P/R.

NPL clubs who have aspirations to join the A-League via P/R should be careful about what they wish for.

Finally will one of the proponents of P/R to/from the A-League from a national second tier please explain how the second tier is to be funded given that semi-pro playing staff is not feasible for such a comp.
