Christy – I agree, “Eddie has done what was needed four years ago and ripped the bandaid off. Now he’s breathed life in Aussie rugby”

Quade, Hooper et al have had their day, and Eddie realises a world cup tournament requires a young , fit and fresh side to get through 4-5-6 games in a short time frame. It’s attrition, and typically 30+ year olds play well for a few games but after 4-5 games the legs and body tires. Eddie understands that favourites can get beaten in world cups, beaten by teams who are enthusiastioc and fresh, look at the womens soccer WC, Germany, USA, Brazil all out.

Souths started the year knowing they had the most difficult draw of all teams in the first 10 rounds, having to play Panthers (x2), Storm (x2), sharks, Roosters, Broncos. No bye until after Origin (round 17). They were focussed and after 10 rounds they were equal top of table with no team playing footy as good as the Bunnies were. Once they got through that hurdle, it was widely expected that the next half of the Souths season’s draw was relatively easy (3 byes, dogs, dragons (x2), tigers(x2) warriors, etc). Yet they fell apart, as you say only 3 wins since round 11 (v Tigers, Titans and Warriors) and tons of points conceded. Shocking. I can only put it down to attitude or mental preparedness to front up to each game. Our only hope is that the loss v Sharks was a jolt, and they start to build momentum over the next 3-4weeks peaking come finals time.

NRL Run Home: ‘Four-point games’ loom large as 11 teams battle for five spots in precarious finals equation

Come on DP, you know Souths will enjoy knocking the chooks out for the second year running.

Steveng, I hope I am wrong but based on the recent form and our weakened forward pack (no Tom B, with Tatola, Arrow injured and the stooges at the Rabbits letting Liam Knight go!) I cant see the Bunnies beating the Knights in Newcastle in front of 20,000 of their home fans. especially since the Knights are playing for a spot in the 8. Not sure what JD is doing but it seems like the players are turning up expecting to have won the game without trying too much. A solid win v Dragons (points differential) and the bye should scrape us through to the 8..just…

The Matilda’s are playing a good, clean brand of football. Their game v Denmark was probably the best Socceroo/Matilda’s game I have ever watched. They played, skilfully, with great enthusiasm and teamwork. They were entertaining to watch. This is the great for football, no matter what code one follows. It was a blessing in disguise, that Sam Kerr wasn’t playing as that may have change all the dynamics of the team. Well done Matilda’s in getting the whole nation behind them.

'I’ll be supporting whoever plays against Australia': Are people engaging with the Women’s World Cup, or just along for the ride?

The Matildas counterattacking offensive was on song, that midfield pass by Fowler to Foord was Maradona-like. Hopefully they continue to play as a team as they have done, and not be too reliant on Sam Kerr.

Foord Fiesta! Caitlin and Raso fire Matildas into quarter finals as Kerr makes long-awaited return

Glory glory Mike, I am glad that you still have the foresight to see the intrinsic value in Souths, I hope the players have also read this article of great faith. We know that if Souths put it together they can score 3 tries in 3 minutes and that in itself justifies their power ranking, they almost did it vs Sharks scoring two very quick tries in the second half, then unfortunately young Tyronne Munro dropped the ball in a scoring position. Left it too late and no excuses for that game, but Souths know they can do it, they know they can beat whoever is above them, they are truly capable, the question is will they?

NRL Power Rankings: Parra falls, Sharks skyrocket and Souths in the last chance saloon

Curtis, you’re spot on with de-Klein. The ref who gave us amongst others Sin Bin Sunday (last year souths v Roosters). While all the news is about Nathan Brown’s head high, a definite sin bin at minimum, but what the hell was Sipley binned for? I think the biggest screw up was Daniel Tupou’s tackle on Koula around the 28′ of first half was clearly a professional foul and Tupou should have been sent for 10, but he stayed on and scored the next. I turned the TV off at that point. This actually conditioned the game more than all the other ref decision as it put the game out of reach for Manly by half time.

Fans should get a refund: Refereeing de-Klein shows how far NRL's gone backwards since golden age of officials

Robbo’s always whinging, yet the rorters always get the rub of the green. Daniel Tupou’s tackle on Koula around the 28′ of first half was clearly a professional foul and Tupou should have been sent for 10, but he stayed on and scored the next try.

'In that other code, it would have been sent off': Robinson compares decision to rugby union as Brown ban revealed

Bring it on, the problem – it won’t be a level playing field, JWH can do whatever he wants and won’t be sin-binned or placed on report. Hoping Lodge and the big O unsettle the chooks. Not sure if Radley is playing, but I’d enjoy the big O give that midget a little ruffle.

NRL Round 23 match-ups: Kangaroos halves square off, Lodge v Jared and the clash of the NRL's favourite Poms

Great analysis Mike, and good comparison with Kennedy and Mitchell.

Why good teams can pick the Sharks apart - and why Will Kennedy is the player they can least afford to lose

The Warriors are certainties to make the top 4, considering their easy draw (after their bye) against Titans, Eagles, Tigers, Dragons and Dolphins. They could well win all those games. The litmus test will be in the finals when they come up against harder competition like the Panthers, Broncos, Storm or Bunnies. They may well go out in straight sets.

Warriors’ surge to finals is biggest surprise since 2005 Tigers premiership run - and Shaun Johnson deserves Dally M

I thought about putting the Warriors in my “maybe’ bucket so probably either way. Souths did beat them (quite convincingly) only a few weeks back when the pressure was on, so I suspect they may cave under pressure especially v Panthers. The Knights, playing well but I don’t believe (my opinion) a full strength Knights would beat a full strength Souths, Storm, Broncos, or even an Eels or Cows for example, let alone a Panthers team.

NRL Power Rankings: The logjam to end all logjams is brewing as finals favourites lose and outsiders close in

talking geology..right?

NRL Power Rankings: The logjam to end all logjams is brewing as finals favourites lose and outsiders close in

The question to ask is on their day (no injuries, suspensions etc) which team could potentially beat the panthers?

1. Broncos yes
2. Rabbitohs yes
3. Storm yes
4. Eels maybe
5. Cowboys maybe

The rest of the contenders “no”: Raiders, Warriors, Knights, Sea Eagles, Sharks, Roosters, Titans.

Of course their will be always outliers, as we have seen the Tigers beat Panthers.

NRL Power Rankings: The logjam to end all logjams is brewing as finals favourites lose and outsiders close in

Souths losses over the last 2 months where are result of 7-8 of their best players being out due to Origin or injury. Now with all their stars back (as they had rounds 6-11 when they won 6 in a row and beating Panthers, Broncos and Storm consecutively you’d expect them to be one of the biggest threats in the league. As for finals, Souths have in the last 5 years, appeared in 4 prelim finals and 1 grand final, the experience and pedigree is there, which on their day and with their firepower they are capable of beating anyone.

NRL Power Rankings: The logjam to end all logjams is brewing as finals favourites lose and outsiders close in

Souths were expected to win this one, and one could sense a sigh of relief when they did. The tigers fought admirably, but I sense the Bunnies will now build strongly from here. Alex Johnston hat trick and great game, how such a great player and role model hasn’t been picked for Origin is mind boggling (ahh I forgot it’s the Freddy and Brandy politico show). Latrell good first game back. In the forwards Murray, Arrow and Burgess all played well. As much as I would have preferred the Bunnies play some of their remaining games in Sydney, it was great to see the turnout at Tamworth.

ANALYSIS: Bunnies bounce back against Tigers in Tamworth as Mitchell impresses in return from injury

Luai should heed my father’s words “get a haircut and a (new) job son and you’ll be right”

So overrated he's underrated: lucrative deal awaits polarising Panther Luai wherever he signs next

Roosters – finding some desperation and form, I am going for the big upset v Broncos. Roosters to win.

Souths just v Tigers, it will be a tough game, “home’ advantage will be with the Tigers (they’ve played in Tamworth before), Tigers get Brooks back and that’s all they need to start playing better.

Storm should beat the eels, however Eels seem to find an extra gear when they play Storm and Panthers.

Knights on a high, should upset the Raiders in a very close match.

Manly over Dragons. DCE 300! Dragons had their “big’ game last week. Players playing for contracts.

Penrith penrith penrith (soory Sharkies).

Dogs will beat the Phins. Home ground advantage.

Cows to pummel the Titans, it’s a Qld rivalry thing.

No ref or bunker blunders – I’ll get this tip wrong

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions Round 22: More stars return, others ruled out as everyone celebrates Women In League

Wow, that is surprising.

Complete nonsense: What are the NRL’s most overrated stats?

Penrith then daylight…. Broncos, Souths, Storm or Cows. These last 4 seem the most likely to be able get to the GF, but winning it against the Panthers would need them to take it to another level. I would have as a smokey, the roosters, if they beat the Broncos this weekend, then put a cricket score on the Tigers, then they become a threat.

Mathematical chances: NRL premiership race down to seven - and that’s probably being charitable

Well discussed Mike, IMO the most telling stat is “errors” a team with few errors per game invariably wins, show me a team that has 15+errors in a game and I will show you the loser.

Complete nonsense: What are the NRL’s most overrated stats?

Souths have got the good to win the comp, we all know that, and its only July. If their stars peak around September time then they’ve got as much chance of winning the Premiership as the Broncos have now sitting in second spot.

NRL Power Rankings: The Tigers finally hit rock bottom, but it's all looking up for Queenslanders

Taupau should have been directly sent off at the 12′ of the game for that reckless and dangerous kick to Graham. Not sure how the bunker and ref let that go. Crazy.

Apart from that, sloppy game full of errors from both teams especially Souths, and either team wont go far in the finals if that is the standard. The Bunnies should still make the top 8, but will definitely need to re-adjust their attitude to games, they seem to complacent as if they are expecting to win, as for their defence it’s getting bottom of the table-like.

ANALYSIS: Demetriou slams 'embarrassing' Souths as Walsh runs riot - but Taupau might be in big trouble after knee raise

yes however Premierships aren’t won in July either….a lot can happen in 2 months.
