Yeah WhoDis proofreading is needed although in this case such a Freudian slip is understandable

Rugby News: Wallaby with 'drive for perfection' inks new deal, Kepu loses captaincy, Farrell says 'au revoir' to England

Glad to see Mehrtens on the list, I think he is the best tactical kicker of the last 50 years. I hated him when he played against Wallabies/Waratahs because he would turn them around and pin them in the corners time and time again — glad the 50:22 rule didn’t exist when he played.

Masters of the Air: The ten greatest kickers in rugby history - from All Blacks 'wizard' to the Scot who changed the game

Hipwell deserves his place as an all time great. For those to young to have seen him play the closest modern player is Aaron Smith. My favourite, and probably fake Hipwell story is about his first prep for a game with Mark Ella. Supposably Hipwell asked Ella whether he wanted the ball laces up or laces down and Ella replied ‘you throw and I’ll catch it’ and so the Wallabies have a Grand Slam tour. Thanks for the article.

Brave, highly skilled and well-respected: John Hipwell was the quintessential rugby halfback

Yeah it is a combination of the Aussies struggling with that aspect just like the 15s and the Argies being really good at that, they seem to win most of their kick-offs against all teams including the Blacks and Blitzboks. Looks like it has been a real focus for them with great hang-time on kicks that only go 12-15m and a few quite tall players who are good in the arial contest. One of their tries came directly from the kick-off where their speedster stayed back waiting to pick up the crumbs of the arial contest, any AFL crumber would of been proud of the work. Great to see that just like in 15s there is more than one way to win a game.

'Gutsy', 'brave': Aussie women survive first-half red card to claim back-to-back tournaments, men go down in final

A great tournament for Aussie 7s with both sides in the finals. The women were fantastic to play a whole half with only 6 is exhausting to think about and the French came roaring back. The men got roasted by the Argies, the Argies play a an interesting game using their big men with short passes better than any side and their kick-offs are super, the Aussie men need to make better first up tackles in the middle of the field, Longbottom showed the way.

Yet another rising Wallaby who has an apprenticeship in Europe, I’m sure this will improve his game (only time will tell), RA needs to be helping young players get some time in Europe

'Pissed off': Why Eddie snubbed Noah and the five-month stint in France that's changed his outlook

Another epic final Black Ferns v Aussies never disappoints. Congrats to Caslick and team.

“zero difference”? 23-32% reduction in concussions across the 3 trials is a lot, lot more than “zero difference”

'Can of worms': Rugby Australia introduce radical tackle law reform to protect players

“the gum shield will show that PSDT tackles below the sternum are worse than most tackles to the head” … do you have a link to this data?

A 30% drop (as per the France, SA and NZ trials) is not marginal

Brendan can you provide a link to these studies?

So for each ball runner 3 defenders will be needed for your plan — looks like lots of space out wide — great result for rugby fans

Yeah I think Aust Rugby should encourage young players to do an apprenticeship in Europe especially tight forwards

Not my idea I read it elsewhere but I can’t recall the poster’s name

'That was a mistake': Top ref's blunt verdict on World Cup bunker call

How many decisions does a ref make in a game? One a second would be 4,800, so maybe double that at 10,000 (if anything this is probably a low count because somethings like scrums and rucks need multiple calls per second). So if 5 or 20 are controversial that is a very low rate. Yes, not all calls have the same impact on the game, but a ref shouldn’t be making a call based on how important it is but on whether it is within the Laws and guidelines … so all calls should be equally important.

TMO and ref decide. As far as I can see it there are two types of TMO review. Either the TMO saw something the ref didn’t (like foul play off the ball), or the the ref is checking on something where they, the ref, was unsighted. In the first the TMO will already have decided on an angle, maybe the ref asks for a wider view for context, maybe another angle if the first isn’t clear and maybe a slomo, so 4 max. If the ref was unsighted (like a try under a pile of bodies) then they might ask for a couple of angles that aren’t obscured and maybe a slomo, the TMO might have a look at more angles and suggest one — so again 4 max. Only allow 4 then make a call.

I agree with 2 more teams but I would just have a Japan based side and another NZ team. The Sunwolves were popular with good home crowds and TV ratings even though they weren’t very successful. Another NZ side will dilute the NZ teams a bit and help level the playing field.
Each team would play play all the others home-and-away across 2 seasons for 13 games plus a 6 team final series. After the final, while the internationals are on, the Aussie sides could play another set of derby matches (to complete 8 home-and-away games) with points from the first set carried forward before a 3 team final series.

The need to make Super Rugby stronger and viable in the long term means it is time to expand back to 14 teams

Someone else (I’m sorry a couldn’t find their name) suggested that the TMO/Bunker replays be limited to 3 or 4 and then a decision has to be made, I think this is a good idea and will quicken the game up. The TMO/Bunker can still have the time to decide on yellow or red cards as that doesn’t slow the game down.

Well with the coach and chairman gone it can’t be said that nobody has been help responsible for the poor RWC and overall poor year. Will next year be better? Only time will tell the rest is idle speculation.

'What a shame': McLennan GONE as Rugby Australia name World Cup-winner chairman to bookend wild year

That try assist by Bell was a great reminder of one of the few positives from the sad WC, he must now rank as one of the Wallabies few world class players.

Eddie's painful reminder of what might have been at World Cup as big name Wallabies star despite Baabaas defeat

Pumped? Wasn’t it 35-20, a nice win but no more. ABs got off to a good start and caught the Boks napping, after that it was fairly even. Both sides have moved on since then.

SPIRO ZAVOS: England's bully boy, no rugby display against Boks is the game they play in hell. Now for the salvation

3 of their tries cam directly from kicks

SPIRO ZAVOS: England's bully boy, no rugby display against Boks is the game they play in hell. Now for the salvation

Really — I think we were watching different games — 3 of the Bok tries came directly from kicks and the fourth from field position gained by a kick. Did Kriel pass by hand to his wingers at all in the game?

I really like the draw. If the draw had been later then the top 4 sides would have been one-in-a-pool and we would never had Ire v Sa and Fra v NZ which were great viewing, we may not even got Jap v Arg which was also great. Also if the top 4 were spread out then the first time they would meet another top side would be the semis and they could win the WC after only facing 2 of the other 3 top sides, this draw means that if one of the top 4 wins the WC they will have played all 3 of the top 4 sides — I like this. I do feel a little sorry for Sco but then they were well beaten by SA and Ire.

Parkes Life: The joke's on us - could it be that World Rugby knew what they were doing all along?

The Portugal v Fiji game showed how at its best sport is better than any novel or movie — the passion and tension were real and so was the drama — wonderful.

As to the draw — while I agree that the pools were unbalanced this draw has at least meant some great games — Fra v NZ and Ire v SA as pool games only happened because of the draw. The draw has also given us this weekend Fra v SA and Ire v NZ. In fact for any of the top 4 to win the WC they will have probably had to beat all 3 of the other top 4 which is great. A balanced draw would probably have meant that we would have had to wait for the semi-finals to see a top 4 v top 4 game, and a for a top 4 side to win they would have only had to beat 2 of their fellow top 4 sides — so as a fan of a side never likely (Wallabies this time) to win I’m loving this draw.
