The ‘junkyard dog’ nickname has three sources of derivation. 1: The old Jim Croce song Bad, Bad, Bad Leroy brown who is described as “badder than a junkyard dog”, 2: the idea that it isn’t about the size of the dog in the front but rather the size of the fight in the dog (sort of a Honey Badger ref), and 3: used to describe somebody who eats anything and everything. From what I hear it is mostly 3 and a bit of 2, Ryan has quite an eating reputation especially for somebody of his size … maybe we need a Ryan v Tupou eating competition.

Good to see some players coming back from injury. The Force 2nd row with Rodda and Carter backed up by Williams looks good, for the Reds if Flook plays as he did before injury and Hunter P does as he did last week then that looks dangerous, great to see Alaalatoa back.

Great article, I love all the nicknames. I have never understood how much negativity there is in the Australian rugby community. It isn’t even a new thing, many posters here can’t even watch a clip of Campo ripping through the All Blacks without some snarky comments.

The women’s comp is really getting competitive, a few years ago it was mostly Aust and NZ and while those two sides are again the favourites having a British team and the quality of France, Ireland, Canada, and Fiji it will be great. Of course Australia with Caslick, Ashby, Williams, and the Levis will always be a chance.

I’m sorry but this article is so predictable and somewhat bias and lame — every time a favoured player gets hurt or carded there are calls that the game is too violent to be controlled or is going soft. Rugby has shown it can control excessive violence, as mentioned in the article spear tackles are much rarer now, as are shoulder charges (SBW style, which were legal), and raking of players on the ground. Of course change isn’t quick but Rugby has successfully curbed excessively dangerous play before without diminishing the physical contest and, in all likelihood, will again.

Big step up for the Tahs especially the desperation in defence, the defensive lineouts and, kicking out of hand. Edmed made some good accurate kicks but I was also impressed by the length of kick from Walton and Jorgenson, Tahs need to keep these kicking options in mind as it keeps the defence guessing and takes pressure of the fly half. Even Gleeson put in a good kick.

For the Reds has Petaia ever been tried at inside-centre? He has the size to play the Kerevi / Danty crash ball roll more that Hunter P. I acknowledge he can throw some very unwise passes but that often seems an act of desperation in the wide channels when he has been isolated (yes becuase he tends to run away from support), in close there is more likely to be a team mate about especially Fraser McR and McDermot. Might be worth a try since the Reds have Campbell at the back.

For the Tahs I think the time has come for Teddy Wilson to start ahead of Jake Gordon (maybe make Holloway or Bell captain). Jake has been a great servant of the Tahs and held them together in some dark days but seems to slow to the breakdown and to content to just kick and hope, a tactic that was never his strongest. Game seemed much faster when Wilson came on but it was late and maybe Reds had slackened off a bit, time to seem what he can do as a starter over the next few very tough games.

My best 3 Aussie players from the weekend were:
Leota — in a well beaten side he (along with Kellaway) was highlight, plenty or runs and tackles and some good linking work
Harry Wilson — broke the line, good offloads, chased and tackled all day (yes the rest of the Reds backrow were good too)
Nick Frost — best of the round, broke the Rebels lineout, yes there were some poor throws but it was Frost’s pressure that caused the yips, he put in plenty of ruck work and a few carries
Interesting to look at the halfbacks, Lonergan and McDermot both played well but still lack a zip pass (check out Jameison-Park for Ireland over the weekend). I think Tahs should start with Wilson, Jake Gordon looks too concerned with the ref and the rest of the team and too ready to make a poor kick.

Tough tournaments for both teams. The men looked quite flat, hopefully the addition of Hooper will spark the team. The women were again in with a good chance but France have been charging. Congrats to Caslick on her 50th tournament.

Happy with the Tahs side. FLW’s addition strengthens the lineout and allows Hollaway to play at lock which is a more natural slot for him, looking forward to seeing young Amatosero. Joey Walton at fullback is a bit of a surprise.

Great for Aussies to make both finals but a pity about the eventual results — congrats to Ireland and Argentina both played really well. Both Aussie teams need to work on their kick-offs on both sides of the ball.

I was quite worried how both teams would go without their main playmakers but they did really well. The women’s final was another excellent match as games against the Ferns generally are. I hope the injury to Ashby is not too serious she has really come of age this year, as the article says the one-two punch of her and Caslick means the Aussie women are contenders every tournement especially with other great players like the Levi’s, Paki, Nathan, Smale etc
