Considering that getting suspended for one week by the MRP is cause to be out of contention for a brownlow, surely taking a banned substance is also a cause to lose it.

I think the focus should be on the integrity of the competition and not the intent of the players taking the drugs. At the end of the day, ignorance is no excuse, nor is the fact that the drug may or may not have been banned when the players took it. If the drug has not been classified by WADA, assume it is illegal. It seems pretty simple to me.
It’s a shame, but I cannot see how Essendon can defend this.
