a bit of a mixed performance here Ronan. Sure Warner and Khawaja need to step up. But your lack of stats and suggestion that they should be dropped is ludicrous.

apart from smith, burns, stokes ….no other player has has an average >50 this series. Here are some of the run tallies:

wade 118 (includes a century in 1 innings)
root 99
bairstow 96
khawaja 91
denly 85
paine 66
bancroft 44
warner 18

Two points here:
Warner is bottom of the pile by a long shot next to Lyon (18), Archer (12) and Anderson (7). I think his complete lack of confidence is quite different to khawaja who is getting out to good balls rather than average/bad balls.
Also, do you you think england would consider dropping root, bairstow or denly who have similar runs to khawaja?
Would be good to be bit more objective in your assessments.

Warner and Khawaja face make or break Ashes Test

i would definitely keep the same team for the next test.

siddle’s role cannot be underestimated. he essentially tied up an end and really slowed the first innings which meant the lead was only 100 instead of 150-200. Add to that, he bowled in partnerships…so while he didnt pick up 10 wickets, the pressure he built allowed lyon and cummins to flourish.

Starc bowling average is 28 in tests, which is way above the likes of cummins, rabada, philander, bumrah etc. also he leaks runs like a sieve. so in a scenario where he is not getting wickets and leaking runs, which happens not that uncommonly, we are in big trouble…

Australia bulldoze England in first Ashes Test

ODI record of just a few current players:
Kohli 59 @ 93 (avg @ strike rate);
Babar Azam 53 @ 86;
Root 52 @ 88;
Amla 49 @ 88;
Rohit Sharma 49 @ 87;
Bairstow 48 @105;
Ross taylor 48 @ 83;
Wiliamson 48 @ 82;
Du Plessis 47 @ 89;
Warner 46 @ 96;
The reality is Smiths 41 @ 86 is not earth shattering, nor is it anywhere close to the top 10 of players playing currently.

Clinical England boss Australia in World Cup semi-final

the weakness of this squad were mainly two:

1. the middle order of maxwell and stoinis were terrible. we need people like hussey and bevan at 5/6, not little kids who can hit a few 6s every 5th game.
2. spin bowling. both zampa and lyon were average. fawad ahmed would have been better

top order (1-4) and fast bowlers (starc/beren/cummins) did a pretty good job.

Thoroughly outclassed, but Aussies can take heart in ODI revival

fawad ahmed had a great season domestically and in international leagues. he is the best legspinner in the country tbh

Thoroughly outclassed, but Aussies can take heart in ODI revival

i blame it on walking around the park with shoes off. can’t believe Langer made grown men do that. all it did was made the playing XI look timid and weak.

Thoroughly outclassed, but Aussies can take heart in ODI revival

great point except smith isn’t the best example. his ODI record is good, not great.

Should langer be dropped? He has had a terrible 12 months as coach.

I vote punter any day of the week…in fact any day, ever.

Clinical England boss Australia in World Cup semi-final

maxwell was terrible.
smith got his chance at 3 but couldnt take it, went at snail pace when he should have upped the tempo. smith was great at tests but he is overrated in ODIs tbh.
stoinis is a walking wicket.
handscombe technique will not survival anywhere except on dead pitches.

Clinical England boss Australia in World Cup semi-final

the form of maxwell is a big worry. He is basically being carried the whole tournament. thanks to the top order, we havent needed maxwell to win a game. The one game where we did need him against India, and then again today against South Africa, he has failed spectacularly…..and very predictably. Maxwell is a bit of one trick pony. Handscombe in for maxwell might be the way to go?

Wounded Australia fall to South Africa, drop top spot ahead of World Cup finals

finch’s comments are odd. He can’t say if Ussie will need to be replaced until the appropriate scans are done, yet he things Ussie will be replaced. you can’t have it both ways, can you?

Wounded Australia fall to South Africa, drop top spot ahead of World Cup finals

a bit off topic. but has anyone heard the old man ian chappell speak? age must getting on a bit. His views would explain some of greg chappell’s bias selections over the last 5 years. they openly and clearly dislike some players over others.

World Cup semi-finalists all are flawed

nice one Ronan. out of the box but probably the right call. i cant see the top 5 of warner finch khawaja smith maxwell changing. we have enough batters and only 1.5 all rounders, mitch marsh would have been a great albeit bold call!

Maxwell, Marsh injured as Australia forced into World Cup swap

S Marsh was dropped from the test squad anyway. I can’t see handscomb getting a game.

The last group game should be used as the final practice before potentially two huge games. Best team needs to be on the park. Which means Handscombe on the bench with Carey in good batting and OK catching form.

Maxwell, Marsh injured as Australia forced into World Cup swap

overreaction much? Starc is good but is he THAT good?

Mitch Starc may retire as Australia's greatest ever ODI bowler

back to the dog house. mentioned the great bradman in the same comment as the overrate and average player at best, Maxwell, deserves the dog house.

Carey has gone to another level

does he average >40 and strike at > 100 in shield cricket?

If he does, then there may be hope. if he doesn’t, then thats just your crystal ball prediction. past predicts the future. I haven’t seen any test quality innings from him (yet)

Carey has gone to another level

moot point Peter. He had countless balls to face. he could barely survive 5.

Pretty average for a ‘marquee’ player.

Carey has gone to another level

dhoni taking singles and playing out dot balls in the last 4 overs was ridiculous. very very dodgy tbh.

England end India's unbeaten run in CWC

can you imaging all the maxwell fans complaining if he comes in at 6 or 7?

“not enough balls”
“wasted talent”

We saw the talent on show against NZ. When had a chance to face 40 overs, he lasted 5 balls!!!

Carey has gone to another level

I dont think we should pick the test team based on cameo innings in ODI games. if he is good enough, he will surely show it in shield cricket. his shield cricket record is not crash hot i don’t believe.

Carey has gone to another level

when carey opened last year, he was way out of his depth and struggled badly.

6 or 7 is ideal position for Carey when the initial swing etc is gone and he has to finish with not too many balls to play. This game he showed he can face >50 balls without losing his wicket which is a good sign.

Carey has gone to another level

what about the other 5 innings of the 12 innings. i dont think cherry picking the best 7 innings is the right thing to do, need to look at the overall picture.

yes, SR is more important for a middle/lower order batsman. However you must be adaptable. If you’re in at 70/4, you cant be playing the same way as when you are 280/4. That adaptability, ability to knuckle down and guts it out when team needs you even if it means being a strike rate of <200!

Australia recover from slow start to hammer New Zealand at Lord's

i think clarke has improved a lot to be honest. he was very tacky and superficial when he started, now he can give a few useful insights.

Slater on the other hand….omg, he is past his use by date. Keeps saying same thing over and over again, annoys the other commentators, annoys the listeners, can’t help with his personal subconscious biases.

Australia recover from slow start to hammer New Zealand at Lord's

Strike rate is over-rated.

example: a player of huge potential gets 10 off 5 balls for 8 innings in a row.

His strike rate is an astonishing 200%.
His average is an astonishing 5! I would take average above strike rate any day for ODI cricket.
