excellent performance by australia and very well played Khawaja and Starc.
Wickets were tumbling like ten pins. If Khawaja’s dogged defence and ability to stick it out wasn’t on display today, we could we have been all out for 120. its amazing how one big partnership can totally change the complexion of not only the innings but the whole game.

M Marsh at 5? You have to be kidding me. Jofra Archer, Bumrah, Boult and co would be licking their lips at the prospect of knocking him over.

Exactly this Andrew. Warner can slog at any time. If they are going for 6, the fielding restrictions dont matter as much. Conversely, Khawaja is the consummate opener….scoring at a decent clip, stabilising the whole innings and creating a platform for maxwell (and warner) to launch from.

we dont need an all rounder. 6 best bats, wicket keeper and 4 best bowlers is a good way to go.
Maxwell is getting 10 overs down at a good economy rate, and often times better than zampa or any of the other bowlers.
Infatuation with past glory is not going to change the current facts. Stoinis is a weak link at the moment, he is getting smashed out the park with his bowling and isnt getting any runs. Replacing him with an outright batter or bowler will very likely strengthen that respective department.

Helps reverse our dismal losing streak in 2018 when he is finally picked in the squad.

Outscores Kohli in 5 match series by over 150 runs.
Instrumental in overseas series win agains Pakistan.
Two centuries and 4 scores >80 in this year.
Averages close to 60 this year.
All as a opener/top order batsman.
And then, the world cup comes along and the wise coach/selectors decides to play them at no 4 or 6 to keep the right/left combination alive. If this were to happen, it would appear that this player is getting shafted to say the least.

sure it was a win, but hardly convincing. I dont think india or england would be worried in the slightest.
Langer’s obsession with left hand/right hand combination needs to stop. Sure it can be your 101st tactic but it seems to be the defining tactic for the batting line up. Smith and Khawaja are accumulators and can pick up the pace when needed. why you would drop one of them to number 6 and thus waste their tremendous talent and run-scoring potential is beyond me.
Punter, please take over as coach or knock some sense into Langer.

Amazing and scary that marsh who is mediocre player at best is the ‘only’ choice for starting position in the Australian first XI.

I don’t think being an automatic selection should be applied in ODI or test cricket. Both should be based on merit. With 18 months of no ODI action, I cannot see the current merit which warrants his selection in ODI cricket. Of course in test cricket, they should be even further down the selection pecking order

Marsh in for Stoinis is a great option. Marsh can build an innings quicker than Stoinis anyway. 5th bowler will have to be Maxwell with a couple from smith.

is dropping warner an option? 1 year ago he was the team destroyer in the dressing room. i really hope he not becoming the team destroyer on the pitch. 8 overs of dots balls when you’re chasing 350 is simple inexplicable.
Probably wont be dropped but maybe play at 4 or 5?

Warner faced 48 dot balls, which is 8 overs worth of dot balls! And in the end we only lost by 36 runs. I thot the top order was too slow after the initial 5 overs of watchful play. Only Khawaja played with a strike rate >100%. Finch was unlucky. Smith slowed down after a brisk start, not sure why. Warner was very slow, scorring his SLOWEST 50 in an important world cup match chasing 350!!

i dont think you can be so prescriptive to say its the top orders job to build innings.
modern game, modern roles. All players must be able to build an an innings. Slowly probably not the right word but I get it, do it patiently, get a partnership going, then flourish.

I think the complainers will have some reason to whinge. It was solid and comprehensive win with the best 11 players playing. Move on.

I tend to agree with you. I don’t think I Ang team were going to have a 100% record. England still favorites. But this game showed 2 things:
1. England are beatable and if the other team has a blinder they could knock England over
2. Pakistan are a very dangerous team if they get their act together.

That’s because you chose 18 months at your convenience. Why not 3 months, 6 months, 12 months? How about 24 or 30 months?
Taking it back just to include his century in England will of course inflate his numbers. Classic example of statistical manipulation.
Also 18 months ago, the 3 best current bats (khawaja, Warner and smith) were not in the team.

Pick the best 4 bowlers in the country, pick the best 6 batters in the country, pick the best keeper in the country. Worry about variety, left/right combinations etc later. the best players can adapt. changing the position slightly Isn’t going to suddenly make them go from awesome to being rubbish.

Rashid has taken big name players from all of those countries in the IPL, with nonchalant ease sometimes. You can’t dismiss IPL form when that was the whole basis of Warner’s selection etc.
He might not get as many stumped or edge type dismissals because the wicket keeper is not as good as he has in franchise cricket. However his bowled and LBW type dismissals where he is not reliant on anyone else will continue to be huge threat based on recent IPL performances.
Overall I think we fielded the best team and this team should continue for now.
Only question would be if stoinis gets pegged by marsh if management feel we need slightly stronger batter at 5 or 6.
