It was the late Johnny Warren (Captain Socceroo) who instigated the name change for good reason. And it was Frank Lowy (Old Soccer) who took up the challenge to head up new Football with the first CEO John O’Neil (Rugby) paving the way for the name change. It was the late Johnny Warren realising that the tag Soccer is not the game in itself, but a label the game was forced to endure for far too long. The game is Football and we have always been Football. I can’t understand why anyone from the past or present in Australian Football would still want to be called Soccer—we are now Football Federation Australia (FFA). If anyone from ‘Old Soccer’ felt left out it was their choice. They are all still very welcome to join the revolution of new Football. And they are rightly doing so now.

"Old soccer" invading "new football"

Yes that is a good point.

Angry Socceroos' skipper Neill hits back

Arrh good ol’ Bernie—yes he is always good for a source of information that comes from a fly on the wall out of the player’s dressing room sheds. I think Les fell for a sucker punch.

Neill should no longer captain Socceroos

Tony—I want to discuss the un17 performance against the Ivory Coast. I was surprised we won that game when the final whistle blew after 93 min. Yes the 4-3-3 system was in place and at times we put in some beautiful moves playing out from the back, but the technical standard of ball control was well below the Ivorians, which is a concern to me. The passing was soft when it should have been crisp and sharp—the players lost possession because the midfielders were waiting for the ball to come to their feet instead of moving towards the ball. This resulted in too many pass being cut off by the Ivorians who easily read the Australian’s play and as a result of this were 60% higher up in ball possession stats. I am hoping this will be rectified against the Brazilians or we will lose if it is not. The Brazilians will not waste their chances in front of goal as the Ivorians did. We are lacking a bit of mobility and steel when the battle of possession has to be won on some of those vital occasions in the midfield.

Short day with strides forward for Australian game

C’mon Mid, if it was not for SBS and Foz, CCM would be still playing Scottish type Football under Laurie—instead of the better brand of Dutch football under Arnold. You should be praising and thanking SBS and Foz for their constructive criticism, instead of lambasting them so often as you do.

Are negative football stories truly bad for the game?

That’s quite incredible

Can Matildas win at the World Cup with kids?

If the “Matilda Kids” win the Women’s Football World Cup it will be an Australian media story that will blow all the Football haters away. But realistically if we get to the quarter finals it will be a win for Australian Football.

Can Matildas win at the World Cup with kids?

Well said Kassey, and another example of a journo who only reports on Football when there is a perceived negative attached is Neil Mitchell (Melb based radio shock jock)—I think we all know what his true motives are.

Kyle Patterson of the FFA invited Neil Mitchell to come to a football match on his radio show to see for himself the good atmosphere that football fans can create, but he replied “No Thanks ! ! ! ” Yet he will report at will, with every opportunity what he thinks will damage the game in Australia.

Has he ever once congratulated the Matildas and wished them well on their coming Women’s World Cup odyssey.? No he has not. But a football match that has some small minor incident was worth blowing out of proportion.

And Nicky Carle ..?

Sydney FC snare seasoned Dutch defender

I’m getting the feeling that SFC are now a serious contender for the Championship, with that the supporters are reengaging and the confidence is back at the club. The HAL 7 ver is going to be a beaut.

Laim—you have stated you played AFL in London in a league of sorts. Let us say that Football is at the bottom of your list then.

AFL international has been an expansion plan of their code directed from head office and have been boasting about those growing numbers overseas for years. In their view they are full ledge leagues of AFL.. Beach football is a total different product and has entirely different criteria played on sand not on grass pitches—they are more of a side-show then serious football leagues we don’t pretend for one moment that they part of Football’s over all first class football competitions.

Why it should be called soccer, not football

This is an interesting piece historical fact of the English Football Association History..

PS You may have to go to replay to find the start of the video

Why it should be called soccer, not football

Laim—It was Football Association before it was referred to as Association Football—the English Football Association is what it was first known as and still is—the game has always been about football not association.. The first rules of the English FA were the Cambridge Football Rules and they were codified long before Melbourne Rules which were adopted to form the Victorian Football Association then eventually the AFL. The English FA adopted the Cambridge Rules when the English FA was first formed. Why is that considered by you to be so far removed from the AFL’s pathway and by AFL folk ? Even now your code is still struggling with rule changes and the overseas AFL international football is played on rectangle pitches with 9 players aside with altered rules. AFL is far less codified then Football is…

Why it should be called soccer, not football

Fuss—-this is a very big story for Australian Football.. Two heavy weights of the World Game wanting to manage an Australian Football Club—the Melbourne Victory FC. More international Headlines for Australian Football. Man oh Man does it get any bigger than that. The United Kingdom must be a buss with what is going on in Australian Football..

Keane takes on Yorke in Victory battle

Sebastian Hassett
April 28, 2011 .

Dwight Yorke has emerged as a shock candidate for the vacant coaching position at Melbourne Victory, it looks as though he will have to fight off competition for the role from former teammate Roy Keane.

The former Manchester United pair face fighting for the same job after Keane told sources he was ”very open” to managing the two-time A-League champions.

Keane has been in Australia on holiday for the past month and is back in Sydney, where he is waiting to hear more from Victory about whether he could be the right fit as their manager.

After beginning his managerial career at Sunderland, Keane moved to English Championship side Ipswich, where he was in charge for 18 months before being sacked in January. The former Republic of Ireland captain was thought to be only vaguely interested when he first held talks with Melbourne more than a month ago, but now his interest has grown and he is discussing with his family the prospect of moving to Australia permanently.

Why it should be called soccer, not football

I agree you have been Victorian Rules for over 100 yrs

Why it should be called soccer, not football

“Chelsea’s victory sets up a potential title decider next weekend when Carlo Ancelotti’s men travel to Old Trafford to face United.”

This game is going to be a cracker—-can Chelsea do it? C’mon Chelsea a win here will be vital…

Chelsea late show keeps title dream alive

That’s funny, the only Australian Football team that I know of who played in London was when the National Australian Football team playing the English National Football Team at Craven Cottage in Chelsea London.. It was a big event for us Aussies that day as we won 1-3… Are you sure you weren’t in Melbourne.? Does Melbourne have a London suburb perhaps?

Why it should be called soccer, not football

Yep, those Swans fans will cheer everyone on except the Swans.

William and Kate versus the AFL

Amoson—personally I can’t understand why anyone would want to follow a sport you can’t represent your country in. As a child it was always my desire and dream to play for Australia. And now I’m past it I still fantasize playing for the National Australian Football team and scoring a hattrick in the World Cup Final. So I feel for you, as your dreams can never be on a world stage and as glorious as mine.. ha, ha..

Why it should be called soccer, not football

Anyway you said “I only follow Football because it’s the world game with 208 football leagues in the world..” Those are your words.

So what? I presumed you would have realize I follow it with a passion. Wouldn’t that be obvious to you if I only concern myself with only one code..? Good heavens man I didn’t realise I had to spell it out to you…

Why it should be called soccer, not football

Yes… any part of the body can force a behind..

Why it should be called soccer, not football

But there is the contradiction—you say it’s still subject to the laws of the AFL and all you Aussie Rules folk carry on as it’s an identical version of what is played in Australia–it’s not. English Football has a different identity to Italian Football etc. but the rules are the same. As the names of different Confederations of FIFA Football and again the rules are the same.. Futsal (Indoor Soccer) is a different product with different rules—we do not pretend it’s the same product as Football.

Why it should be called soccer, not football

Well equally you don’t read my comments properly and take them out of context—why wouldn’t you think I don’t follow my football with a passion.? Just because I said it was the world game that I follow ?

Why it should be called soccer, not football

Wow amazon you love very sport equally with a passion LOL

Why it should be called soccer, not football

AFL is a different game in the European version with 9 players on a rectangle field… Really you have a poor understanding of codification. Best you check out the FIFA’s governance for all its leagues internationally around the world.
