David, with the very greatest of respect, you should be ashamed of yourself. How is it possible that in 2020 you can advocate discrimination against someone who has had mental health issues? I hoped that we were all a little more aware than that.

The tough call on Will Pucovski

If you asked me today, probably Brisbane. They were never dominant during the season, but turned it on in September.

Hawthorn, at least to me, had an easier run at it than the other 3. 2013 in particular, their opponents just did not show up.

Geelong was a disappointment. 3 premierships from that side was almost a failure. Really should have won in 2008, and essentially self-sabotaged in 2010.

Richmond, well ask us in a couple of years. Probably have the highest potential of the group, but let’s see how it goes. They blew 2018, if Mason Cox doesn’t play his best 1/4 ever then Richmond wins.

The best ‘dynasty has to be Melbourne 1954 to 60. 7 consecutive grand finals, won 5. Except for one bad 1/4 in 1958 they would have won 6 in a row. None of the 4 we are talking about here even come close.

Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn or Richmond: Which dynasty has been the best?

Is it possible something happened since last December?

Eight early takes from the Sheffield Shield

‘Lies, damned lies and statistics’. It’s an interesting approach you take on discounting Hamilton’s records using some cherry-picked stats.

Just a thought, did you consider the effect of Schumacher spending his years of dominance in a team where his team-mate was explicitly instructed to move over? Hamilton has never had that privilege. If the Mercs are winning 66% of races (I’m taking your stats at face value), and Hamilton had the same benefit, just how many would he have already won?

I’m no fan of this seeming never-ending need of fans to claim xxxx is the GOAT. It’s an impossible question to answer, and so needless. Just enjoy the performances.

But, by way of disclosure, when in Buenos Aires I did visit Fangio’s statue.

Five talking points from the Eifel Grand Prix

Ben, did Lewis Hamilton steal your girlfriend?
Agree that he can be a bit of a whinger, but he probably has a point on this occasion. The race directors rules, that have been published since the race, were not breached by him (at least as I read them). It was a monumental stuffup by the stewards.
Danny Ric, what else would we expect. Probably the perfect way to respond.

Five talking points from the Russian Grand Prix

Thanks Paul, that’s a beautiful article.
I’m probably 6 or 7 years older than you, but you’ve summed up a lot of my feelings on cricket now.
I just remember 74/75 and watching the poms dancing to avoid Thommo! The first crystal clear memories are of the 1977 Centenary Test. I had one of the programs, signed by several players, with all the stats in the back. What a game, hooked forever on test cricket.
As a very excited 9 yo I went to one of the WSC Super Tests, at VFL Park. Sure The Aussies were going to win when the World XI were 7 down, still needing about 50 to win. This ‘no name’ Pakistani called Imran Khan came in to bat and made it look easy.
Going to the MCG as a 14 yo to watch Border and Thommo bat for maybe 1 ball, and nearly pull off a miracle.
Seeing Viv Richards in imperious form knocking up 158 in a ODI at the MCG.
Listening to coverage from England on the radio for every tour since 1977.
They are great memories.
For me, something broke around sandpapergate time. I’ve found it hard to get interested since.
ODI’s I have enjoyed, but they can be a bit colourless. A few memorable highlights, and lots of dross.
T20! I would rather have my left nut cut off than watch T20.

How Cricket Australia killed my interest in the professional game

Whoosh.

Although I guess a joke failed if it needs to be explained.

Seven talking points from AFL Round 2

Agreed. I would add Tim Lane, before he discovered that you could use money to buy stuff (ie went to commercial coverage).

Are these cricket's best-ever commentators?

Thank you, I always thought I was alone on Jim Maxwell. Barely competent and rarely accurate. The never-ending NSW cricket mafia agenda from him becomes tiresome as well. And is it some sort of crime to give the score occasionally?

Are these cricket's best-ever commentators?

Have to disagree. Murali was a chucker. Full stop, end of story. It’s an utter disgrace that his records are in the books.

And before you ask, that applies to everyone bending the arm.

The ten most cringe-worthy moments in Australian sport

Agreed, but it’s a starting point only, and needs a lot of work to be of use.. I’m actually not so pessimistic about the revenue side, assuming we are talking 3 to 6 months. If we are still discussing this in 12 months then all bets are off.

Which AFL clubs can survive the coronavirus?

That’s an interesting starting point, but as you note it is mainly using last year’s running costs in this year’s environment. They are 2 very different beasts. How about run a similar exercise with some working assumptions such as salaries reduced by 75%, operating costs reduced by a similar number (don’t need to hire the team bus anymore etc). I’m sure that would give a clearer snapshot of where the club’s are at.

Which AFL clubs can survive the coronavirus?

Sigh ……. So you picked out 6 teams you don’t like (or simply threw a dart at the ladder), then tried to back it up with some facts. Oops, sorry, no you backed it up with some prejudices and ignorant suppositions. Man this sort of stuff gets tiresome.

I’ll give you a single pertinent fact. The AFL’s single greatest source of revenue is from broadcast rights. The broadcast rights deal is predicated on 9 games a week. Provide less than 9 games and the people handing over the money will be handing over a lot less. Then 12 other teams are struggling. Think on that and understand why 6 teams are not going to disappear in 2 months (or even if the season is already gone).

The six AFL clubs that could go to the wall

Slightly off topic, but the best job interview I ever had revolved around an NRL SOO game. Working in Brisbane, but looking to move to Townsville, it just so happened that the entire partnership for a Townsville law firm were in town at SOO time. Would l be interested in meeting them at 5.30pm on a Wednesday evening? Of course! So, please come to the Caxton Street Hotel, meet us in the bar, and we’ll have a chat. All good, interview goes well. Then, ‘we have a spare ticket, want to come to the game?’ Again, of course! At kick-off I looked around at them and every single one was watching me, not the game. I think it was the final test, if I had not screamed out ‘Queenslander’ I sure the job was gone. Happy times.

AFL fans have just one reason to be jealous of our NRL cousins

When you essentially have SOO games played every week, why would you bother with an officially branded version?
I doubt there is the public interest in it, and I’m sure the 18 teams don’t want it. Why on earth would you risk your best player(s) on a meaningless game, then miss a premiership shot as a result.

For Aussie rules, SOO was fun in the 70’s and early 80’s, but it’s time has passed.

AFL fans have just one reason to be jealous of our NRL cousins

‘When I use a word’, Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, ‘it means just what I chose it to mean – neither more nor less.’
I see that Lewis Carroll had you pegged as far back as 1872.
You don’t get to decide whether others see your comments as racist.

Star Indian bowlers being exposed by Australia

Dean Jones being the perfect example of this. For whatever reason, some players get their cards marked and just don’t get picked.

O'Keefe should be in Test squad instead of Swepson

They didn’t play for Sydney, even though Sydney had first dibs on them. It’s really not that hard to understand, Sydney recruiting staff messed up, and Ron Casey played a blinder for North.

North Melbourne, your time is now

They were zoned to Sydney at the time, both being NSW boys. Sydney passed them on to North Melbourne for $10k (that’s a number from memory), I believe without even bothering to wonder why North was interested.

North Melbourne, your time is now

Hopefully all the folk out there wanting Lyon dropped for Perth because only fast bowlers are successful there will pull their heads in. I’m sure they won’t, but one can always hope.

Lyon gives Australia a massive edge over New Zealand

Whoosh!!!

Tim Paine must go

Changing the perceptions to make North a ‘destination’ club is something I want to see. That’s not going to be an overnight fix, it takes a long period of success. But being able to get in quality in the areas we are poor in is a must.

The 1990’s team was, in many ways, rather a fortunate experience. A group of talented players indoctrinated in the Dennis Pagan style through the u-19’s, augmented by getting Longmire and Carey from Sydney for essentially a set of steak knives. If anything that group underperformed with only 2 premiership (I’m still upset about 1998). But what was built on a sustained period of success? To my mind it was a wasted opportunity.

Fingers crossed that this time the back-office team can take full advantage if/when a bit of on-field success is obtained.

North Melbourne, your time is now

My aren’t you a needlessly offensive individual. Don’t like it when it’s pointed at your lacking in history team. Perhaps we get rid of West Coast and get a real WA team in?

You’re obviously too young to remember the eagles players leaving to play for ‘Brisbane’ when they played out of Carrara. Very much the Gold Coast Eagles then.

The fixturing argument is a furphy. I reckon the last time the best team on grand final day didn’t win the game was 1967. But moaning about a fixture is always an easy way to shift blame if your team doesn’t win.

Tigers, Pies and Cats to hog the limelight as AFL unveils 2020 fixture

Gold Coast Eagles?

Tigers, Pies and Cats to hog the limelight as AFL unveils 2020 fixture

With the very greatest respect, TheGeneral, you have posted 5 or 6 times in this thread stating he is not good enough. That’s your opinion, but personally I don’t believe it is based if fact and does not take into account times when he clearly should have been picked. He has always marched to the beat of his own drum and in my view that has resulted in him not being picked regularly. If he was Glenn Marsh he would probably have 50 tests under his belt.

But my main issue with your posts is, don’t you think they are part of the problem? You’re happy to come on here and disparage his record while clearly just driving your own agenda, when quite frankly you have no idea what you’re talking about. He should feel just fine because he has a contract? Really? Mate, if you think that makes it all ok then you quite obviously have no idea on mental health issues. And no, I have no idea what Maxwell is dealing with (and would not be taking any statements from CA or people like Craddock at face value). But I do have a bit of lived experience on this one.

Glenn Maxwell to take break from cricket to deal with mental health difficulties
