Lovely forehand winner at 146km/hr to wrong foot Williams and it’s 15-0. Serena then sends her return forehand long and it’s 30-0.

Pace kicking up a bit now with several rallies coming into play. At 30-15 Stephens sends a slice backhand into the net to give Williams a game point and she fittingly takes control with a nice deep serve down the T which Stephens frames and sends into the crowd.

Not much in the way of big points or rallies going on at the moment with only one point so far being lost on serve.

At 30-0 the first real rally of the game kicks in with Stephens hitting a drop shot to force Serena into the net but she’s quick to get there and forces Stephens to hit the return long.
Follows it up with a nice serve to hold to love.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this live commentary covering what should be an entertaining and exciting quarterfinal match up between two big-hitting Americans. On one side you have the master of the women’s game, 15-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams who is looking to continue her phenomenal 20-match unbeaten run and will today appear in what I believe is her 35th Grand Slam quarter final. On the other side of the net is her young protégée, 19-year-old Sloane Stephens who is certainly starting to make a name for herself on the WTA tour. Appearing in her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal she has absolutely nothing to lose and will go out there giving it her all as she takes on a legend of the game. They’ve only played once before, in Brisbane a couple of weeks ago where Serena won in straight sets 6-4 6-3 and although Stephens is playing well, it’s hard to see her giving Serena any real trouble today. Serena’s power and experience is likely to prove too much for the up-and-comer but she will fight hard and we should be in for a great contest. Way too many errors coming off the Stosur racquet today and she just couldn’t control the consistency of Zheng. Sad to see her go out after such an encouraging performance in the second set. She really has to work on that mental strength of hers and having the ability to close it out when needed. It’s clearly what lost her the game..
Great work by Zheng. After that poor performance in the second she never gave up and showed guts and grit to get over the line. Sam could learn a lot from here in that department. Anyway, as we move on to the third round it’ll be Zheng up against 18th seed Julia Georges from Germany after she beat Romina Oprani earlier.

Sam of all things double faults to give Zheng the match. Really sums up that last set for the Aussie who just mentally couldn’t get back in it after the second set.
