We (Storm), need a captain who is capable of pulling the team together. Unfortunately, we have a nice guy as captain, who is not capable of doing that job.

ANALYSIS: Broncos surge into prelim after heartbreaking Papi injury - but were the Panthers the big winners?

Disagree about Welch as captain. Storm have surely missed the Smith captaincy. I think Welch will grow into the role. Was never impressed with Bromwich as captain, a great player, but not a great communicator.
Defence is about communication – and it requires a captain to communicate.
Down to 12 for half 2nd half, heavy conditions, and rain, it was always going to be an impossible task. I thought they did really well.
In those conditions, Munster needed to be up the front, not down the back. Dropping Hughes to fullback, and bringing Munster to 5/8 may have been an option worth trying.

'I don’t know what planet they’re on': Three bins, three tries as Manly win Battle of Brookvale 2.0

Read an interesting comment from a USA commentator re the Soccer World Cup. He was explaining it to US audiences. “World Cups are not about the skill, the English Premier League beats it hands down. It is about the team with little chance punching above their weight, about the unearthing of special talent and crowd-pleasing personalities.”

By the numbers, RLWC a success: Blowouts a teething problem as all sports expand their footprint

Next WC, IMHO, pool matches at 60 minutes and dump the 6 again.

RLWC Daily: RCG injury latest, Radley in doubt, Taumalolo makes ominous return as Tonga thrash Cook Islands

Agree re both points on FTA.

But where is the $$$ going to come from as advertisers look to spend on other formats? The FTA model of selling advertising is going backward. Certainly there will continue to be money for the FTA media.
The Government may mandate a FTA compulsion for sports, but will they stump up the dollars?
Once the giants – Amazon, Apple, Disney etc move on sports, the international presence will be essential.

Never mind the blowouts: Why Australia must do more to make future World Cups better

FTA media may not be able to pour the $$$ into sport for much longer. Streaming is the way to go.
Sports that have e strong international following will collect the $$$. The rest will only have the crumbs.
In Australia, cricket and RU are probably the best placed as far as an international presence.
RL needs to work on having an international following. The WC is the best way to do it.

Never mind the blowouts: Why Australia must do more to make future World Cups better

We are not talking sheep stations re-funding international RL. Just cut the free-loading hospitality budget in half!

How can we improve the standard of international rugby league?

Play lots of internationals, put funds from NRL into developing nations, and get FTA media exposure everywhere.

How can we improve the standard of international rugby league?

Being of vintage when Qld vs NSW teams comprised players who were currently playing in the state from whence they were chosen.
Understandably a consistent walkover for NSW.
My point is that there will always be controversy re representative teams, both state and international.

MICHAEL HAGAN: Why players will ultimately pick the Kangaroos’ first-choice team at World Cup

Some very good points from the Italian coach. The mingling of local players with heritage players is a good way to grow the game.
International growth is absolutely essential in such a media-fragmented world. The FTA media gravy train may not be around for much longer.

'Eventually, you run out of players': How domestic talent's helping Italy avoid league's heritage trap

I think that playing the 1st week of the finals at home grounds is excellent.
The home fans deserve it. So what if there is a bigger ground many Ks away? You pitch to your strengths and having the home ground advantage is the reward for finishing further up the ladder.
So the AFL has a different method of allocating grounds – big deal.

Suburban stadium playoff policy underlines why AFL is ahead of not-so-National Rugby League

Great teams have 2 components, an excellent coach and an excellent captain. Take away the second and you have a good team, not a great one.
We really missed Smith against the Panthers last year in the semis, as an example.

Why Storm are NRL's flat-track bullies: How eight finals teams stack up against each other

Reminds me of Blackadder. A cunning plan, indeed.

Fittler's major squad overhaul an admission Blues stuffed up selections for Origin I

I fail to understand why the Origin “month” is not devoted to International RL. Even if only 1 or 2 games were televised over the weekend, the atmosphere generated would make for much more compelling viewing.

NRL Round 13 talking points: Absolutely no one likes split rounds

Absolutely spot on….and ditto for the Bunker as well.

The Commentators, especially on 9 should just STFU when refereeing and Bunker line ball decisions scrutinised endlessly.

Respect for NRL referees? Let's start with media's role in making every decision a drama

The AFL showed how not to do it. Aussie FIFO teams aren’t going to grow the pie. You need clinics in schools, support for local teams, and passionate supporters.
It requires real shoe leather, coupled with patience.

The field of dreams: Rugby league and the United States of America

A showcase game in the USA is a phenomenal waste of money. Better to give half of it to the established leagues and clubs in the USA. Much more bang for the buck.
Giving them the funds to run clinics in schools etc is how you grow a game, not some ego-ridden showpiece.

BTW – I would be focussing on China before the USA. An undeveloped sports market is an easier task.

The field of dreams: Rugby league and the United States of America

Before commenting, it would be a benefit if viewing of the game 20-40 years ago. Then the comment would have some real relevance.
A gripping, tense game doesn’t depend on speed. Two teams, evenly matched will do it.
As for the current tempo – about right. Especially, if my team i winning.

Experts Roar: Is speed of NRL too fast, slow or just right?

I note the comments re the retirement of Cameron Smith having a big impact on the team. I agree totally. Smith was a master at controlling play and calming things down when the pressure built. His presence was sorely missed in the last game of last year.
Paps, IMHO, will be a future leader for the Storm. It may take a year or 3, but I am confident he will be an outstanding captain. With Smith and Slater as mentors, he cannot blame a lack of knowledge.

NRL 2022 Radar: Scandals cast cloud on Melbourne but Bellamy can weather all storms

Definitely. The real dollars will come from an international streaming company e.g. ESPN. That is why growing the international game is of ultimate importance.
Forget expanding in Australia, it will not add dollars in the long term.
Get on a plane and head to China, for example. Look at what India has added to Cricket’s bottom line.

What criteria do we need for the NRL's next expansion club?

Excellent series of articles. Fascinating to read the history. Hopefully, the admission of 2 French teams to the UK competition will re-ignite the game, in France, to its previous status.

Rugby league in France: Old men and utopians

When clubs start being run by professionals who understand that developing talent is the beginning of success, then they will move up the ladder.
As to blowouts, I think Roy Masters article in the SMH nailed it. Broadcasters want the rules changed so that a more appealing TV spectacle will result. The tension of a close game keeps audiences’ attention, not minutes of the ball in play. The sooner the clueless honchos at media get this blindingly obvious statement, the healthier the game will be.

'It's the only way bottom dwellars will fight their way up': NRL world reacts to draft proposal

Most French people I have spoken to about rugby à treize, were not even aware of its existence. Admittedly, they were from the North and Paris.
Publicity and exposure are definitely what the game needs. Hopefully the Grand Final this weekend will get a good run in the French media.

Dragons, spacemen and the boy wonder: Is rugby league rising again in France?

Good to see someone call this out. Recreational drugs are embedded in society. Why one drug, alcohol, is championed above others has always confused me.

As long as no one else is impacted, and the job delivered – no big deal.
The funniest one, IMHO, is a player getting suspended years ago, having marijuana in his system. It was classified as performance-enhancing. Now as anyone who has ever taken a toke knows, no way is grass performance-enhancing!!

The 'white powder' dilemma: Why the NRL has no business sticking its nose in

It will be all in the forwards. Bringing on a fresh NAS and Tui will turn the forward battle up a notch.
