Hi Gee, your point is very true but this isn’t a one-off for Conway, he is currently averaging 75 in ODIs and 59 in t20.

Devon Conway is yet another talented South African playing for a different country

Hi Kalva, I do agree with you that some of the players mentioned above might not have been walk-up starts for South Africa. However, I do believe that these players would have made the national squad far deeper in quality and would certainly have improved the domestic league had they hung around. That’s not CSA’s fault necessarily and I wasn’t trying to blame anyone, more just exploring why they may have decided to leave to play different leagues. Hopefully now that Kolpak contracts are gone, the problem will be fixed. Saying that Trott played ‘only 50 tests’ is a little bit unfair, that is far more than most. And while Conway is still young in his international career, a 7th placed South Africa would probably play him in a heartbeat at the moment.
I really enjoy these discussions so I do appreciate your input 🙂

Hi Patrick, I appreciate your input as you have backed up your argument well, however I didn’t explicitly say that Conway left due to the quota in place, rather stated that, in my opinion, it could be a reason for some players leaving to play in another country. I’m not resting the whole blame on the quota, I stated also that same players did leave the country as children. I was not aware that South Africa meet the quota in the way that you stated but surely when the president speaks up after two missed games, there is serious pressure on the board.
I do appreciate your input Patrick and I loved the way you put forward your argument 🙂

The apartheid extended further than just a quota but I certainly see your point in that it can easily be seen as double-standards.

Hi Lara, I think cricket always has an element of luck and I don’t doubt that was the case here. What I was pointing out, or trying to at least, was that what he did is an unfortunately common occurrence for South Africa and exploring why. I had no intention of attacking South African cricket or the players.

No doubt South African cricket has its issues but with the quota, it is effectively out of the board’s hands. It has far too large a political impact and there is, as far as I’m aware, many people in South Africa who feel as though the quota is justified. The article discusses the reasons why these players leave, not whether it is wrong or right.

That is perhaps a discussion for another day

I agree with some of what you said here and I’m not privy to South Africa’s rugby setup. I’m not actually attacking South Africa in this piece but more making note of this occurrence and exploring why they do it. It’s been a pleasure having this discussion with you Greco 🙂

I think we might be in furious agreement with each other here Riccardo haha. I have no qualms with the players who leave, this article was more exploring why they do it. I suppose it comes from a place of worry because this is probably the worst South African team I’ve seen.

I genuinely hope that it is. I personally have always loved watching South Africa and some of my favourite ever players are from there. Hopefully the administration will improve and they can be right up there again.

Hi Jacko, I must admit that is a subject I must research on more but I believe that had something to do with South Africa’s exile from international cricket

Hi Greco, I completely understand if you don’t agree with what I have to say, you wouldn’t be the first haha. I did mention that some of these players left the country at a young age in reference to Labuschagne. Kevin Pietersen has a terrific test record and even if he didn’t play at his best against South Africa, it doesn’t take away from his greatness. Strauss and Trott I will agree may have had a slightly tougher time getting into the side, but their test records suggest they were more than capable at the international level. I don’t quite understand the whole notion that because they didn’t play for their home country, they must be lesser players.
Even though I disagree, I do appreciate your comments because I’m always willing to learn more.

Hi Riccardo,
With respect I don’t think I mentioned Watling, but that is beside the point. Whether or not some of these players would have been walk up starts for South Africa is debatable, but surely it’s in the Proteas’ best interest to keep these players involved with the system to create better depth and push the national side to be better?
Thanks for the feedback, I genuinely appreciate it.

Hi Greco, even if that is the case, which obviously I don’t believe it is, surely South Africa would prefer to have these players improving their domestic league and pushing the international side to stay on top of their game?

Devon Conway has just broken into, and improved upon one of the sides competing for the Test Championship Final and South Africa finished 7th, I think South Africa could use the depth of quality in their domestic system

Hi Arnab, yes he did struggle in South African domestic cricket but what you don’t see in England, Australia, and New Zealand is young players who are struggling packing their bags and leaving for a different country. I believe the quota and very poor administration can make it very easy for young players who don’t burst onto the scene to be forgotten and ignored, which in my opinion is what happened to Conway.

Cheers Paul. I agree with you that it is difficult to fix this problem when the administration is a problem itself. I have fears that if things don’t begin to change, we may see a similar downfall to that of Zimbabwe.
