Me and my Dad met him years ago in the Rocks in Sydney. We went up just to say a quick g’day and ended up talking to him for an hour. He was funny, engaging and a true gent.

I’m going out now to have a pie in your honour big fella!

Artie Beetson dead: Rugby league loses a legend

The guy could seek out trouble in Vatican city, much less the Gold Coast. For the love of god Carty, not with a bargepole.

NRL bad boy Carney in Titans' sights

Props Boomshanka. Good post.

It's just not right to include New Zealand

As you know Ian, gates for the PL are down as well, probably owing more to the state of the economy than anything, but the ticket prices haven’t help. Chelsea have recently had a 33% increase on their Champ League tickets, which has caused a huge uproar. The Super League has a chance of gaining some disenfranchised football fans with competitive ticket pricing, probably more so in the traditional RL heartlands like Wigan. Low gates are a problem for RL, but they’re a problem across the board as far as I can see. Times are tough, unless you’re a shiek or an oiliarch.

I agree the game in the UK could do with some personalities. Lets see if anyone crosses over after the Rugby WC.

It's just not right to include New Zealand

It’s true. Sky have invested heavily in RL and have given it a big push in the UK and Europe(I’m witnessing this first hand at the moment). When Sky push something, it usually works. The PL in the UK has expanded to become one of the UKs biggest exports, worth £billions to the economy. If RL can get anywhere near football with the help of SKY, it will be in a very good spot. Can’t see why it won’t happen. The sport is made for modern TV.

How do you know it would get the crossover? All speculation I’m afraid. And what this “win again” business? As it has been point out on this thread there is speculation about which code actually “won” in Australia at least. Jury is still out. What isn’t in doubt is the number of people who watched the respective GF’s, including offshore. The RL GF is the only clear cut winner there. Romped it in, in fact.

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

Hooplah, hate to be pedantic but the NRL is a competition not a sport. The sport is Rugby League, which already is a “big sport”. I like your diminishing News Ltd sentiment though. All for that.

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

And maybe the NRL can plonk another side in Melbourne based on their ratings.

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

But the ratings would presumably be down for both the AFL and NRL finals if they up against each other as you would get the curiousity factor from either camp. Might be a better gauge though.

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

Agreed Cattery and I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that. If you’re an AFL fan and your happy with the 26 week season and nothing else, fine. My argument was more in relation to RL often being undervalued(by other codes) when it has added appeal of an overseas market and internationals after the season proper.

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

I think the figures from across the pond are very significant and are probably undervalued. The NZ advertising market is closely linked to Australia and big brands(think beer) are often tied in with the Australian Ad agencies and branding. This is becoming more prevalent as the borders blur.
RL will always have this ace up it’s sleeve, something the AFL would love, but will probably never have.
It’s also interesting to note that the AFL season is over. No more TV interest, or interest in general until next March. RL has the 4 nations coming up with all the light and shade of team selection and the actual games to keep the game in the spotlight and on the box. Just sayin’.

The AFL and NRL grand final ratings game

Kennoth.

Viewers=Ratings. Ratings=Attracting advertisers and sponsors. Advertisers and Sponsors=Money. Money=A healthy code. Get it.

Your’e new to this aren’t you Kennoth. Try to keep up.

Forget everywhere else, AFL's problem is in Brisbane

I like the way his ongoing feud with Wendell seemingly evolved from being pure hatred to being matey jibes about the size of his arse. You always knew there was a minute amount of respect between the two, but they would never admit it.
I agree, the characters in RL and other codes are slowly being discouraged from being themselves for fear of upsetting sponsors. Post match interview that sounds like they have been written by the same sugary copywriter. Horrible, predictable stuff.

Why Australian sports needs more Mad Dogs

Pity the Broncs juniors will be diluted by the second Brisbane team over the next 10 years. My tip is an upset by the Warriors, but I can’t see them going much further, this year at least.

Who needs the biff when you have finals football?

Bellamy back at LFC? Golf clubs at the ready! Didn’t they learn from last time? How late did Meireles leave it to put in his transfer request? 11.00pm! That got to be a new record. The whole thing has become a farce.

EPL transfer window shuts, Arsenal busy

Using that logic clipper, the AFL could put a team in every city and town in Australia and add up all the crowd figures. Doesn’t exactly work like that though, does it?

Forget everywhere else, AFL's problem is in Brisbane

The problem for the AFL is they more than likely didn’t count on the fair weather nature of sports fans in SEQ. How are these expansion clubs a viable option if they have success and therefore crowd(maybe not ratings) spikes 2 years out of every 10? The Lions crowds and support are a classic case study of the nature of the sporting going public in QLD. Bandwagonesque support when the times are good, but they drift back to “their” codes in the tough times.

I’m sure the AFL bods probably thought they would have them forever. Not the case.

Forget everywhere else, AFL's problem is in Brisbane

Dalglish has benched Suarez and looks like having Carroll solo up front. Carroll should do well against a suspect Gunners backline, as long as he stays out of trouble and doesn’t push(or tap) the defense like he did last week.

Live EPL scores, blog: Arsenal vs Liverpool

It’s easy to characterize RL in terms of its popularity in Australia alone, particularly from the blinkered petri dish confines of certain southern capitals.
However, a cursory glance at the UK Challenge Cup Final at Wembley on August 27th in front of 80k, and the recent 90mill broadcast deal secured by Sky in the UK would suggest that RL is doing just fine elsewhere on this planet, thanks for asking. Not global by any standards, but it still has a healthy professional comp which is seemingly growing in the UK and Europe.

Everyone versus AFL, but NRL shakiest

I can see where this is heading.

Your trying to somehow draw a parallel between the expat kiwi crowd at the Titans games and the expat/travelling fans at the Suns, or on a broader scale perhaps QLD RL(boosted by Kiwis) vs QLD AFL(boosted by expat vics etc).

Maybe if we took the kiwis out of QLD, AFL and RL would be on an equal footing popularity wise, or something like that?

This is me your talking to stabpass. Enough already.

Gold Coast a microcosm of the sporting landscape

Come on stabpass. Are you saying if it wasn’t for the expat kiwis running around in QLD, RL wouldn’t be as popular as it is? That they are helping to boost the numbers?

Gold Coast a microcosm of the sporting landscape

“Perhaps Gould is of the view that only ex-players truly understand the game” Understand the game-yes. Run and administer the game-no. Case in point Parramatta. People with a love of the game, but with a background in business are best qualified to run the game. Gould is a former player and commentator with little understanding of running a business.

Phil Gould needs to show some respect

No other code comes close with support at grass roots? Excluding RL and soccer that is. Check the junior numbers in SEQ for those codes. What do you quantify as grass root support?

Sorry BigAl : ” If your going to comment on QLD at least check you’re spelling.” As in “check you are spelling”? Edit : I see you meant the first your not the second in the sentence. Apologies BigAl. You were right all along. I’ll just shut up now!

Touche(I can’t find the little thing that goes above the “e” in touche. Forgive me!)

That’s Mackay stabpass, not “Mckay”. If your going to comment on QLD at least check your spelling.
