Not exactly a team try, but great hands by Mead. A rare highlight for the Titans in whats been a miserable year.

David Mead scores incredible NRL try [video]

Rogers was a mistake although I think everyone had the right intentions. Presto is a true champ and gent, but he should have left on a (relative) high last season.
Can this season get any worse(for a Titans fan)? Let just finish it now and get on with next season.

Preston Campbell announces retirement

I think the best result is for our friends down south is to accept that AFL will more than likely remain a niche sport in the southern states, as NRL will be in Victoria. History has proven it is impossible to dislodge an established code. AFL had it’s chance with the Lions 3 Premierships and the Swans Flag, but the spike soon plateaued, and then fell. The same could be said of the Storm.

Unfortunately for the NRL they will never be given the media coverage that the AFL is afforded in Syd/Bris in Melbourne, and won’t benefit for the “migration factor” that boosts crowds in the northern states for AFL.

Maybe if we can lure more retirees from the Sunshine/Gold/Central Coast to relocate to Morrabin or Geelong we might have an even playing field. Chances of that happening?

Why's AFL still a niche sport in NSW and Qld?

“Any player on an AFL list could play NRL and well.” All speculation I’m afraid. What we know for a FACT is that KH and IF have made it in the AFL.

“People are working out the NRL for what it is.” Yes, people are working out NRL for what it is. A great comp with record crowds and ratings.

Next.

Truth is most NRL players wouldn't make it in AFL

So Ian, the agenda for the AFL was to “cripple and possibly kill Cronulla and Canberra”? Part of their strategy is to kill of teams from another code, thus shifting the support base of these regions to AFL? Hmmm, so much for the “why can’t we all just get along and co-exist in the community with other codes” tact.

Sound suspiciously like a kind of “war” between “codes”. Yes, a code war. There. I said it.

We can expect more NRL to AFL code hopping

Of course any player from any code would jump ship if they had the type of coin placed under their snouts that IF and KH did. But would this happen again? What benefit would it have for the AFL this time? Bragging rights? A bit of extra publicity for team X? Is it worth the money? Have KH and Issy really been a success? I mean, really?

I’m totally cool with other players jumping ship, as they can be replaced, but please, spare us the “I’m doin’ it for the challenge” spiel. It’s embarrassing.

And what I would like to see is a similar survey done on AFL players to see if they aspire to anything else, or are they happy with there lot in life. Have they ever, I don’t know, wanted to represent their country or travel the world playing sport? No? No one?

We can expect more NRL to AFL code hopping

As I mentioned before, it’s only a name FFS! Seemingly some people south of the border thinks it’s akin to some kind of blasphemy. Lighten up people.

For what it’s worth, I like the “Brisbane Rivers”.

Essendon upset bid team using Bombers name

Lachlan, I would imagine that burning feeling your getting around the forehead is not too dissimilar to the the feeling us RL supporters got when the AFL poached a couple of our star players to gain attention for their new franchises. Or the GWS Giants craftily borrowing the colour palette of West Tigers for their jerseys. Hurts for a while, but it’ll pass.

And, not to understate things too much, but it’s a name of a football club, not some biblical deity. Bombers Shombers. Whatever. Jesus, lighten up.

NRL bid team to fly as the Bombers

Dumb name(apologies to Essendon fans) which evokes nothing of the feeling of the city they potentially represent. I mean Bombers? What the hell has that got to do with anything? Although I suppose you could say that about most teams.
One of my favourite names for a team is the Rabbitohs. Even though I’m not a fan(far from it in fact), I like how the name has a connection to old Sydney and the punters in the street markets back in the day who were their supporters and players.

NRL bid team to fly as the Bombers

Is the average playing career for NRL players shorter? I would have thought it is longer now with the interchange rule than it was years ago. Steve Menzies is still running around in the UK at the age of 38.

Compared to AFL, are NRL stars underpaid?

Agreed The Cattery, Wide World of Sport was an institution. I used to love the theme tune. It meant an afternoon of sport beckoned.

I think we might have got a different show to you guys down south though back in the days before national network syndication. Ours up north was more RL-centric. Did you have big Daryl Eastlake, Maxy Walker, Mike Gibson, Ian Chappell and Ian Maurice(thanks very Max, Muchy) as hosts? I don’t recall a lot of VFL in those days, but maybe was split programming for the different states. Anyone know?

Sports Tonight goes the way of the ex-girlfriend

Dark forces are at work at Ch10 I tell’s ye. Vale ST.

Sports Tonight goes the way of the ex-girlfriend

Actually, I’m going to have to correct you there The Cattery(I know RL isn’t your forte), but Wally famously never won a NRL Premiership. He was sacked by Bennett before they(the Broncos) won their first.

‘Tis one of the great tragedies of our game that the one of the greatest players never held aloft the Trophy.

Origin TV ratings: Decider sets new records (updated)

Wrong, The Cattery.

These ratings will have huge implications for the RL TV rights. The timing is perfect, in fact. As a stand alone product Ch10(and possibly Ch7) will be eager to get their mitts on some of this action. Ch9 won’t give it up easily. Pistols at dawn for the networks. SOO as a product won’t come cheap.

Origin TV ratings: Decider sets new records (updated)

I think they should forget about trying to squeeze extra revenue out of SOO by having it on a Sunday(or Sat) and leave things how they are. Gallop has said as much and hats of to him for finally showing some ticker. Wed night is an Origin institution.
I would think the ratings, as high as they are, would be a little skewed as a lot of people watch SOO in pubs after work, as it is difficult to get back home in time for kick off on a wed evening, particluarly in Sydney. That, and it’s fun to go and have a few after work and get in the spirit. If it was on a Sunday they would be more inclined to watch it at home.

Origin TV ratings: Decider sets new records (updated)

That’s actually rather nice amazonfan. Honestly. Respect.

Victoria ruling the AFL, but for how much longer?

Sure it will be huge ratings wise and rightly so. As mentioned, this one will be the perfect storm. A hungry, lean NSW side, denied a series for 5 years up against a QLD at home desperate to see Locky out on a high.

Unusually, I agree with Gallop. I’m in favour of keeping Origin mid week. It just fits right for some reason. It’s one of those big games that is cool to go and watch after work on a Wednesday, and then talk about the next day with workmates. It makes it feel like an occasion.

State of Origin III set for TV ratings record?

Republicans anti-NZ status is pretty well documented and your right, it does seem at odds with the nature of this forum, however he does have a point.

Aussie Rules Football is seen as being quintessentially “aussie”(the clue is in the name) and would have a hard time getting a foothold there, and it seems an illogical thing to sacrifice a traditional club for the sake of expansion. The only reason why RL has been successful there, and potentially in other countries in the region, is that it doesn’t represent the Australian “brand” like Aussie Rules does.

Victoria ruling the AFL, but for how much longer?

Agreed about Shannon Walker. Now is the time to give him a run.

Good to see Mat back, but it’s obviously for morale and a bit of publicity. Maybe if things work out he might be back next year. Hope so.

Can Mat Rogers save struggling Titans?

That’s right Greco.

Tack that little figure(@170k AU) onto whatever they get for the TV rights in Aust, and you will have a very healthy figure for the GAME of Rugby League. The fact that there is a another professional league, complete with their own TV rights and player pool, is often overlooked by cheerleaders of the other code(you know who you are).

How to move rugby league forward

Out of curiousity, does anyone know if there has been a spike in Foxtel subscriptions since the AFL deal(Redb?)
If I was a Foxtel subscriber(which I’m not) I would want some input over the possibility of the outcome of the NRL deal. If your favorite code is suddenly cut of has less coverage, do you get some kind of recourse? Will you get your money back?

Seven's AFL exclusivity a boon for the NRL and co

Come on Crouchback. Racial profiling is such a bad look.

My missus is Spanish and I have spent a fair bit of time there over the years, and I can assure you this type of behavior from Nadal doesn’t go unnoticed by either the press or the fans in Spain. My impression is that he has the same relationship with the Spanish that Hewitt has with Australians. Verdasco seems to be a much more popular player, but historically its hard to get a united opinion of anyone in Spain.

Incidentally, I was in Spain at the time of the infamous “El Classico” where Real and Barca players were out to shame themselves in equal measure by playacting and diving. The hammering they copped from the press and fans after that match was unprecidented, and rightly so. Next match, they cut it out.

My point is don’t think the behavior of Nadal is a reflection of the “Latin” way. Most play the game fairly and with undoubted skill.

Nadal's phantom foot injury steals game, limelight

And lets not forget tv rights. Bskyb just signed a record £90 mill deal for the super league in the UK.

How to move rugby league forward

The things that give Sydney its appeal and beauty are conversely the things that make it unbearable to get around. Waterways and Hills.
It makes it impossible to have any kind of grid system. We all love the views over the harbour and rivers, but try getting from A to B without confronting a bottleneck brought on by having to cross a bridge. The west is just plain poorly designed. No forethought for expansion, which is only going to get worse.
Unless you live/lived there, you can’t understand the pain. Can anyone who lives there imagine the living hell it would be to attend a game at Brookvale after work on a Friday night after work if you lived in Rockdale?

Sydney can learn from how Melbourne sports are run

Xman, where have you been when we have travelled down this now heavily worn path?

The reason why the Suns get crowds(not tv ratings mind you) even close to the Titans is because of the Expats and travelling fans. This is a fact recognised by the AFL, the Suns management who package up supporters tours to the GC and some less delusional fans. Take them out of the equation, and you are left with a true measure of the support for the Suns on the coast.
